Just do it.

Get the basics, and then the ability to think, assess and plan becomes important. 

If you have such abilities, and perhaps the ability to assess your opponent's methods, you'll be reet.

You heard of en passant ? Where if a pawn has been moved 2 spaces as its first move so it is next to another pawn you can take it as though it had only moved one space ! 
A rule that can only have been made up by someone in a sulk.

When we played in matches, I can't remember it ever being used, nor whether at that age I was even aware of it.

Maybe the teachers agreed not to allow it or something.
