Northern ireland

Is it time to just hand it back to Ireland?

Anyone that is of British allegiance can be resettled in Glasgow.

This would help with Brexit and let’s be honest, we need to move on from this tedious issue. On that I think we all agree.

So - give it back, or carry on dwelling on the past?

Sure you know this and I get the premise of your question and what you mean but it shows the complexity of it.  who are we giving it “ back” to ?  the government/ crown can’t give it “back” to

I'm surprised that we are still in this forum discussing it. Did the world not end after all?

It that now the watermark of success? Brexit didn't destroy the world.

Good news that the government now look like they are ready to act on the border, get ready for the hissy fit from Sinn Fein, Ireland & The EU throwing toys out of pram trade war.

gammon - one of the benefits of brexit will be that we can do our own deal with the US

US - dont fuck with the GFA

We're all busy discussing the benefits and what to do with all the extra money.

Hissy fit from Sinn Fein? Jesus
The DUP won’t take their place in government because of it, do you not think that’s a bit toys out of the pram?

Both sides in NI capable of hissy fit, on this matter DUP justified.

The protocol was rightly designed to not fuck with the GFA.

However, it isn't working, so is fucking with the GFA.

Changing the protocol makes absolute sense then, to protect the GFA.

The 21st 2020 suspension came about when Sinn Fein had their hissy fit over the heating scandal.

Previous ones as a result of various figures making waves for political reasons.

It's how they operate.

Not the way to proceed for sure, but this current one may have focused to minds of the British government a bit, as the rhetoric is building. On that basis, you can understand why they'd do it.

So SinnFein will be justified then because it suits their agenda?

I agree the situation needed bringing to a head, that’s where we are now let’s hope some common sense is used from all sides and a sensible solution can finally be agreed.

Hissy fit over the heating scandal

not sure how much you’ve read into that but what I’ve garnered from your posts on here, I’d say , you’d be in full support of Sinn Fein on that .

it is true both can and have stopped the executive, it’s a problematic side issue of power sharing from the GFA , anywhere else they’d be just absent from proceedings and so wouldn’t do it , but can’t call one side hissy fit and the other justified is my point

NI is part of UK and as such the current interpretation of the protocol by the EU isn’t working and needs changing, if the protocol is amended to make importation easier and less costly what agenda would Sinn Fein find to oppose that?

I read about it ages back.

Terrible bit of legislation of whatever it was called technically.

Doesn't justify closing their parliament. That's how democratic institutions work- by debate and constant change according to need.

DUP doing this now is also wrong.

Big stuff going on in ours too at the moment- the last thing that anyone needs is one side of the house or the other walking out en masse, and it doesn't happen.

So aye, it's hissy fits all round.

They haven’t or wouldnt

it was you who said they’d have a hissy fit and I’m asking why you think the DUP hissy fit is ok

fwiw, I think the DUP position is as much about not wanting to elect a deputy to Sinn Fein as the protocol

I’m actually quite looking forward to how they’ll respond if Boris does “ sort” it out and what reason they’ll give then

They wont- indeed MO has said things need to improve.

For me though, they'd be better all discussing it in their own place and coming up with a plan. Put that to the EU and UK as a concensus in NI should sway the others.

Clearly the DUP don't want the protocol, whereas Sinn Fein do: some middle ground that allows the country to function without the stupid levels of bureaucracy whilst respecting the GFA should be perfectly achievable. Just a matter of some common sense and compromise.

Such things have happened before, even much bigger, to bring about the GFA in the first place.

It was justified as it’s now prompted Johnson to finally deal with this.

The protocol is now centre stage and needs dealing with urgently.

I agree that he also needs make sure the DUP go back to Stormont and form a government.

Wasn’t really the legislation but resignation due to alleged  corruption by one who then refused to resign so it was an impasse

but that’s a whole other story and very boring but yes it’s true to say NI politics depends on cooperation between people ideologically opposed to each other’s point of view and so this cooperation often fails .

I'm not so sure- it's only symbolic after all.

Moreover, should the EU and the British government act and get it sorted, then the issue is resolved and they'd have no reason to stay away.

Very interesting interview with senior DUP official who admitted that unionism had shot itself in the foot at the elections, and a call for less internal division. Sort that out and they'd likely be back with the most seats anyway next time round.
