Well centre backs are a fairly modern invention, but there were the Milburn brothers as a pair for Leeds in the 1930s in the top division (with their brother-in-law in goal). There were 4 brothers (from Ashington) and they all played for Leeds at some time. Jackie Milburn was their cousin, and sister Cissie gave the Charlton's their football genes. In fact Jack's career at Leeds began the season after his Uncle Jim had moved on to Bradford City, so at least one of the extended family was on Leeds' books from 1928 to 1973.

Wanderers v Coventry
My original plan was to arrive 3 hours early on Saturday and get a ticket. No pay on the day required a change of plan. Not enough time between a supermarket shop and going out to lunch to get over on Wednesday morning, but I decided I could go straight from lunch, using 5 motorways, to get to the ground. But before I left for lunch the sales had been suspended. I have an afternoon commitment tomorrow, but could venture over in the hope that sales begin at 9, or even 10. Or I could try after 4, but don't fancy rush hour traffic. On Friday I have a delivery expected some time in the afternoon, so a morning trip seems best. Alternatively I could go and get a printer!

This Weather.....
Grinton Bridge is (was) on the course for the main event, the Elite Men's Road Race. Interesting to see what develops - it took over a year to replace Tadcaster Bridge which had collapsed in 2015.

Bury
Bury entered the league in 1894 and won the second division by 9 points, and conceded less goals 33 (in 30 matches) than any club in either division. Notts County finished second (who they?) with Newton Heath third (after their first 2 seasons at the bottom of division one). The newly named Manchester City (formerly Ardwick) came ninth. Leicester Fosse were fourth, ahead of Grimsby Town, Darwen, Burton Wanderers and Woolwich Arsenal.

Tour De France
Bernal gave his victory presentation speech in four languages: firstly in English for his team's benefit, then Italian to thank the team that first brought him to Europe, next Spanish for the benefit of his amazing number of Colombian fans who made the trip for some or all of the tour and finally French as a courtesy to the hosts. Classy.

Todays Games
It began as a "must win" game, but at the end scraping a draw was a huge relief.
