Player/managers

Been talking football at work and we got on to the subject of player managers. There's been plenty who have done the job in the past but modern football has probably brought an end to this duel role. I can only think of Dalglish and Gullet who won anything major as a PM.

Was Neal still playing when we won the Van Cup, or had he retired ?

Think he retired at the end of the Division 4 season from memory - if he didn't, he should have

not major but Hoddle got Swindon promoted and got Chelsea to some finals, semis and in Europe for the first time in years BEFORE the oil money

Cup Winners Cup and League Cup, albeit they were already in the latter stages of both competitions when he took over from Gullit

Did Rooney play and manage at Derby?

Mixu  at Hibs

did they not win a Cup when he was there

Souness at Rangers won quite a bit.

Was gonna type the same. It’s an odd one as the percentage to player/managers v managers must be incredibly low.

i always wonder how hard it must be to be good pals with someone to going cold on them basically overnight.

I can’t remember who but it was a millwall player in 90s who said he was close to McCarthy and he became a prick overnight when appointed manager.

He retired from playing quite a while before he got the Hibs job in 2008. Didn’t win anything either (League Cup had been won under John Collins the previous year then Scottish Cup under Alan Stubbs in 2016, and yes I was at both games)

Mixu did score a hat trick in a 6-2 Edinburgh derby win though which means he pretty much drinks for free (Steve Fulton played for Hearts that night)

It was probably more like McCarthy became a manager and it was the player who was always the prick.

Wasn't John Aldridge player manager for a while at Trampmere?

Sure he won the c*nt of the year award 3 years running late 90's.

Think he had to share it a few times with Elton Welsby and there was the year Mark Lawrenson pipped both of them.
