You said it was a waste of time for police to investigate online communication offences - but it has been pointed out to you that this includes child abuse, grooming, sexting and other forms of grim abuse.

If you're argument is that police should stop arresting and investigating comments that some people might find offensive, then I'd be in complete agreement with you. But you need to be a little more specific here - because some of those arrests for 'social media posts' are for some fairly serious crimes that we shouldn't be ignoring.

Well If you was on Twitter you would probably realise that some of the abuse handed out by JB is quite mild compared to others, now if you’re all for people like Barton to be arrested and charged then you then it would have to be the same for the (literally) 1000s of others. Surely even you can predict there might be a problem here? Cells? Courts? Police? It’s a bit silly isn’t it.

I'm well aware of that. 

I don't think Barton should have been locked away, nor anyone like him. But he clearly crossed a line that required some form of punishment, and his victims had the evidence and wanted to prosecute. That's the justice system for you.

Like I said if they’re arresting him then they will have to arrest everyone  for similar abuse which is totally unrealistic and can’t be policed. More should be done by the online platforms but it’s totally unrealistic for all absurd like JBs to be policed. Anyone can see that.

Not really on either side here, but you don’t have to be arrested to be prosecuted, likewise you can be arrested and not prosecuted. Think figures are a bit misleading. Either way, it’s clearly an issue in society. I’m of the opinion that Joey Barton is a cock, but definitely didn’t deserve to go prison for it and his sentence was about right. I can’t remember if he was arrested or not but it’s irrelevant.

It's up to the victims isn't it. Barton was abusing and harassing them, it was unprovoked. Calling them nonces and posting a personal address.

That any victim of such abuse (online and in person) can go to court and seek justice is something this country should be proud of. 

And it doesn't mean we now need to go and arrest every man and his dog who's posted something offensive 😄

The figures are clear to see that it’s a mess, arresting more than any other country whilst then not pressing charges against 90% of them. How many hours of police time will that be taking up and wasting.

He was publicly persistently trolling  folk for his 2.5m followers to watch, cheer on and join for no other reason than his own amusement because he's a bullying cunt

Clearly there is an issue with police time being wasted investigating some offensive things posted online. There have been some daft arrests in recent times and police are generally quite resistant to hate crime laws. But the figures aren't all for offensive things posted online. Some are for some really horrific stuff that shouldn't be ignored.

As you say, the figures are misleading. 

It's right for Barton not to go to prison. But it's good this went to court and he's been found guilty as it helps prevent him doing similar again.
