Wanderers Managers

I can go back as far as John McGovern , dont remember anyone else before that .

Who was the worst and/or most hated ? not including caretakers

Retrospectively Phil Neal did a great job at reducing the over priced wage bill . The Lifeline , 2 Wembley appearances and a promotion stabilised the club and he had an awesome eye for a player .

Niel lennon was sold a Lemon , Dougie Freedman was goal difference off . Sammy Lee tried to change too much too soon . Roy McFarland what were they thinking ? Keith Hill failed experiment . Owen Coyle fuckin un lucky , Stoke debacle , but losing Holden & Muamba .

Gary Megson - never forgive never forget . No arguments shirley ?

Greaves got us up but also we were garbage and got relegated the season after next

That wasn’t Greaves fault though.. once again the club didn’t back him and the team was always going to struggle without serious investment. Once the fans turned (I think it was the 4-0 drubbing at Derby that sealed his fate) which was unforgivable after the brilliant times he’d given us!

it took over 10 years to recover. And we’ve been there again recently and now we are slowly on the way back again, which is why I love being a Bolton fan, never dull, rarely boring and more often than not playing for something at the end of the season, either a promotion or fighting relegation 😅

Every time we get a new manager I desperately want them to be the one. The new Allardyce, the new Rioch etc.

The bigest disappointment was that scotch ginger Lennon. I really thought he was going to be class.

The ones I was least enthused were Freedman who was just shite, and Keith Hill. Hill got the shitty end of our then shitty stick but then didn't learn or adapt when things started picking up.

Lennon could have been an iconic manager for us if the circumstances had been different..

You’re probably right pulled the trigger to soon with little investment. Though we spent a lot of money on Mcnab when he was crocked from West Brom think around Haf a million which was huge back then .
Greaves did  well at Mansfield whatmore pitched up there and there is still a stand named after him to  this day

Worst in my time in no particular order

Neal

Evatt

Megson

That’s harsh..

Not sure how you can put Neal & Evatt in the same bracket as Megson 🤷‍♂️

Neal stopped the rot and set us on the road back to respectability, he just wasn’t good enough to take us to the next level..

Evatt shouldn’t be anywhere near the bottom three. Regardless of how crap the last 12 months was!

It’s a top ten so evatt isn’t down as the worst and I forgot about Parkinson so he would be above Lennon . But yes megson archived Europe and if it wasn’t for garside we might of got to a final and that’s a fact we were that close .
playing the reserve came from the top .

No manger would rested players and he got the blame

I think you may be getting Mcnab mixed up with Len Cantello? We signed Cantello from WBA and I think 🤔 Mcnab from Spurs for £250k and Mcnab was the better deal 👍

Cantello was a huge disappointment 😔

DF on the other hand

Biggest game of the season he starts Rob Hall in midfield

The following season he gives us our worst start to a season in over 100 years

The following season he did it again

All whilst talking about controlling the  game without the ball and calling players his gift to us and other such nonsense where he thought he was being smart

And came across like he didn't want to be here

He wins hands down for me

My abiding memory of Freedman was setting us up to 'control the game without the ball' at home to Yeovil, who were bottom of the league.

A horrible smart arse with no feeling for people, the club or the fanbase

You're right on both of those, we shelled £350k out on Cantello and, as you say, he was a big let down

Really? How can Coyle be the worst? The football we played after Megson was initially awesome until it wasn’t..

It really wasnt

We had an amazing month. Think it was November and even then couldnt beat Blackpool

Coyle had the biggest wage bill of any Bolton manager and we couldnt compete in Div 2

Cunt

Absolute dogshit cunt

And yes, I dont like him

Good post that.

Neal and tranmere will live in my head till the day I die.

Megson was the biggest spaz I’ve known.

Evatt is Neal but so far worse as he had the budget Neal could only dream of.

He'd had Duncan Edwards on the books but was off guard when Busby nicked him

This really interests me

Whenever I asked my Dad who the best player that he’d ever seen he always said it was Duncan Edwards. There was no arguing with him

He was BWFC through and through and despised Man U because of a business deal that went sour with “that crook” Louis Edwards but wouldn’t have a word said against Duncan Edwards

He was the nephew of Ray Westwood. He signed onto our youth team and was due to sign professional terms but was ill with a cold. Whilst ill Matt fckg Busby turned up at his home & persuaded his parents to have him sign for them. The story, unverified, goes that Busby gave them the keys to the car he'd arrived in as an (illegal) sweetener.

megson archived Europe

Not sure what this means.

He didn’t achieve Europe as in he finished in top 8 to get us qualified. That happened the season before with Allardyce.

If the comment is we performed well that year in Europe, then that’s that’s ok. But While Munich and Madrid were  up there with my best experiences, unfortunately his lasting legacy of Europe will be the surrender against Lisbon, saving his team for Wigan, which we went on to lose.

Coyle tried and unfortunately got it wrong. Some of the earlier stuff was the best I’d ever seen us play. So for that alone he isn’t in that bottom 3. I never wanted to jack in under Coyle.

Wolves away under Megson was one of the most depressing aways I’ve ever been to as fans were fighting on whether we should celebrate a goal or not.

Megson and Freedman the worst for me (only Neal era onwards). Both looked like they didn't want to be here and ruined any enthusiasm you had as a supporter. They're both 2 year voids for me where I just stopped going or paying much attention.

You can add Phil Parkinson to that list - just miserable

Freedman was the worst imo.

Smug fucker who thought he was a football genius controlling the game without the ball.
