Overnight, Iran's parliamentary speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf accused the US of contravening the truce in several ways, one of which was by "violating Iranian adjustments in the Strait".

Shortly after, another senior Iranian lawmaker, Ebrahim Azizi, said there was "no alternative" but to recognise "the new Iranian order in the Strait of Hormuz".

Security in the vital Gulf shipping route has been one of the most intractable issues to resolve in US-Iran ceasefire talks, with both sides having differing interpretations of who should have access to it and how.

Under the US-Iran memorandum of understanding of 17 June, Iran agreed to use its "best efforts for the safe passage of commercial vessels with no charge for 60 days".

But it has since demanded ships coordinate with Iran when passing through, and warned that attempts to cross the strait along a route designated by the UN's International Maritime Organization (IMO) were "unacceptable and completely dangerous".

To me this highlights the predictable stupidity and futility of “Operation Epic Fury” (🙄) more than anything else. Iran have ended up in a much stronger position wrt the SoH.

If only somebody would have put a better deal in place peacefully 10 years ago we could have avoided all this……

I can't see how anyone can stop Iran for controlling and levying some form of charge for passing through Hormuz - they only need one cheap drone to attack a tanker in order to close the Straight again - and could anyone possibly police it well enough to stop that happening?

Nobody is going to 'invade' Iran / boots on the ground so I imagine the Gulf states will come to some deal to let their tankers and other shipping through. Same with China and India etc?

The world is slowly moving away from fossil fuel energy and I read somewhere that apparently there will be over production of it soon (don't know how true that is though?).

Maybe the penny has dropped with Trump and he's just realised that he can't beat Iran and thrown this paddy?

Three weeks ago, with the two countries close to signing a ceasefire agreement, Donald Trump referred to Iran's leadership as "very smart".

Today, he has labelled them "scum" and "sick people", declaring the ceasefire to be "over".

Which would mean the main consequence of the war in Iran (apart from hugely strengthening Iran's strategic position) is that taxpayers will in effect end up paying higher prices at the pumps and for goods in perpetuity.

What do I know but Iran, China and Russia are all pretty close to each other or so we are told so and China apparently buys the lions share of the oil Iran sells, so I imagine Iran would cut a deal (even free passage through Hormuz) with China and China will definitely not want to be seem interfering in Iran's internal affairs (charging for passage through Hormuz).

I think it is now a given that some form of payment will be made to Iran for passing through Hormuz - maybe the talked about $300 billion compensation is the price (ie Gulf States pay the $300 billion and Hormuz is free to pass, by everyone - until Israel or Trump fucks Iran again sometime in the future.

I don't know I'm only guessing but Iran will 'own' Hormuz, somebody somewhere will have to pay to go through it and I don't believe China will get involved with one of its allies (unlike what Trump constantly does with his).

That's my thinking anyway.

Precisely. A ground incursion along with the Israelis and the Kurds is how this ends once and for all.
