Nolan for Ireland...

today he's said he may seriously consider playing for ireland if the england call doesnt come soon..

personally i dont think he is good enough to hold down a place in the england team, so ireland must be his best bet for consistant international caps...

so who is he gonna end up playin for?

i suppose there every chance that he could wait for that england cap forever and end up never recieving a cap...

He's unlucky that both Gerrard and Lampard are both around at the same time, and they are both fairly young.

I think he might be as well playing for Ireland. If Sam becomes England Manager though, he would probbaly get in the sqaud and quickly get a cap (probably as a sub) and then he would be tied into England

Can't blame him if he picks the ROI.

Career wise he'd be better off going to the ROI

If he considers himself English, then he shouldn't

He'll never be in and around the England team though

People could have given Lampard this kind of advice when he was at West Ham whilst Beckham, Scholes, Gerrard, etc were at their pomp. But he chose England, stuck at it and broke into the team - mainly because he was shining in the Chelsea side and playing regularly European football.

Don't like to say it, but Kev Nolan performing regularly at Liverpool or Manchester United could well see him propelled into the England set-up.

Take a look at John Terry as another example. Who in their right mind thought he could oust Campbell or Ferdinand in the England defence?

It's a absolute joke he has a choice.

He is English and should only consider playing for England.

I am no 'Billy Britain' but I would rather play for my county once than play for another country 100 times.

If he plays for Ireland he will never have the opportunity to play for HIS country.

Sven goes after the World Cup so who knows what the new manager will think. He does not deserve to play ahead of lampard and gerrard, but he does deserve a squad place.

When Mcateer played for Ireland they were heading for world cup finals and England were n't.

Playing International football should be about representing your country not just another game at a slightly higher standard. (is Ireland v Moldova a higher standard ???)

2 things very wrong with this situation

firstly - you can choose which country you play for

secondly - the fact that if he was at a fashionable club, he would be getting the same chance s Jenas , Carrick and the rest.

not that I think Phil 'Vile is England class, Moyes had it right by saying that he plays more football at Everton than he did with the filth, at the same level, yet he doesn't get a look in now cause he's not at the filth.

pick your best 11 (Nolan wouldn't be in the English best 11) and the best squad (he would) from the players available, not from the top clubs.

Probably will pick ROI or Hayley

(See what i did there Traf)

I'd wait a couple more years

the next English England manager would probably not be as ignorant as Sven, particulary as managers like Curbishley knows from his own experience that players at his team get overlooked - if the FA do go with one of English names touted he has a chance

Ireland aren't going to the World Cup so there is no rush

Probably will pick ROI or Hayley

very good! :D

In my opinion he should stick it out and wait for an England call. He is English and one cap even must mean more to him than 50 with a country that means f??ck all to him.

I just wish he had a Scottish grandfather and then I would be saying totally the opposite! :D

He'll get an England cap soon.

Don't pick the micks kev

You know it makes sense

I heard his bird already had a Dutch cap.

Sorry Guys you've lost me. Who's Hayley?

As in Roy and Hayley from Corrie!

if he does pick ireland we`ll probably stand a better chance of keeping him,can see them cashing in on him if he plays for England

look at gigs playing for wales.. he could have well been in the england setup for years but he first broke through left side was pretty well taken.. cant remember who by though..

im sure ive read that giggs could never have played for england anyway coz he actually is welsh as a welsh bloke standing in a welsh field with his welsh trousers round his welsh ankles...

Giggs does regard himself as Welsh though.

He played for England Schoolboys I think so he never represented the country England.

Interesting to see how many games he would have played had he chosen England.

Think he has just over 50 caps. Pretty shit when his debut was in 1991 and no major injuries.

you have to remeber though.. when was the last time wales were ina major tournament... ??

There is that but 4 caps every year is still shite

Its all bollox

Mind games

Sams probably set this story round to get Sven off his skinny white crusty arse and give him a cap so he can't play for anyone else.

Same happened with owen hargreaves, he only got a cap because Germany or whoever it was wanted him. How the fcuk he stayed in the squad I don't know. But he has a soft spot for bolton so we'll leave him bee...

Staunton aiming to bring Nolan into the Irish fold

The Republic of Ireland have appealed to Fifa in the hope that Bolton midfielder Kevin Nolan will be allowed to play for Steve Staunton's team.

Nolan is eligible for Ireland through the grandparents ruling but, while his under-21 appearance for England was in a friendly, he has also represented them in a competitive game at under-18 level.

Everton's Tim Cahill successfully challenged a similar situation having played for Samoa at youth level and is now set to represent Australia at Germany 2006.

Having been overlooked for England's recent friendly against Uruguay, 23-year-old Nolan has virtually accepted that he will not be part of Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad for the World Cup finals.

Fifa are likely to take a sympathetic view towards the Premiership's player of the month and Staunton has spoken to Nolan about playing for Ireland, where he could look forward to regular international football.

Ireland play Chile in a friendly in May and, if the paperwork can be done in time and Nolan commits himself to the Republic, he could join Bolton team-mate Joey O'Brien in the side for the South Americans' visit to Lansdowne Road.

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce, however, thinks Nolan still has a chance of attracting the attention of Eriksson. "Kevin has led the team with passion and professionalism,'' Allardyce said. ''Each week he gives you everything and he has the ability to be a top player for years to come. One of his main attributes is his ability to score goals on a regular basis. If he continues to progress, he'll go close to earning a seat on the plane to Germany in June."

Tottenham's Aaron Lennon is another player Staunton has in his sights if the winger's eligibility can be rubber-stamped.
