NICOLAS ANELKA will become Bolton Wanderers' record signing when Sam Allardyce agreed to pay ??8 million to Turkish club Fenerbahce for the France international's services. Anelka, who has 31 caps for France, has penned a four-year deal with the Wanderers after successfully completing a medical at the Club's training HQ at Euxton on Thursday.

 

A delighted Sam Allardyce said:

The Versailles born star came up through the youth ranks of Paris Saint Germain before starting his love affair with English football - by joining Arsenal - as a 17 year-old. He broke into the Gunners' first-team in the 1997/1998 season and was a key figure in the North London club's league and cup double. He scored the Gunners' second goal in a 2-0 FA Cup final victory against Newcastle United.

 

His blistering pace and finishing prowess saw him pick up the PFA Young Player of the Year award in the 1998/1999 season.

 

In the summer of 1999, Real Madrid dispensed with ??22.3 million for the Frenchman's services. He spent just one season in Spain before returning to his first club Paris Saint Germain.

 

After a season in his homeland, he returned to the Premiership with Liverpool, where he spent a period on loan, netting four goals in 20 appearances.

 

The Reds didn't take up an option to sign him permanently and instead Manchester City boss Kevin Keegan paid a club record ??12 million for him.

 

In his three seasons with the Manchester club, Anelka netted 38 goals in just 89 games before he opted to join the Turkish giants Fenerbahce.

 

The 27-year-old frontman will travel to London with Big Sam on Friday, when he will meet up with the Whites contingent at their London base ahead of this weekend's game against Charlton Athletic at The Valley.

Back of the net! Im chuffed to bits. Sent a tingle down my spine when I heard the news on the BBC. Well done to the board for stumping up the cash. Top 6. Im taking deposits now for our UEFA campaign next year! If he can continue his goal scoring record as he did at City, top 6 is a definite.

It's a fantastic signing for the club, although people will still claim we have no ambition.

 

It will be interesting to see how we change the team formation to suit the inclusion of Anelka...............will he be the "1" in the 4-5-1, or will we finally change to 4-4-2?

They signed him for 4 years so if the bricks go out of the pram in the first 18 months there is no chance of him seeing out his contract and going on a free so if he leaves we get our money back.

Our offer to Palace for Johnson was payment in stages too (as opposed to Wigan's all up-front) - I dunno if this split payment for Anelka means we have cashflow for other players too, or if that's it for money upfront - we shall see in the next week...

 

We still should have enough to pay decent wages with those that we've lost though.
