I don't know what is with some fans but there are a small minority of morons at the game on Sunday that through their constant swearing and agression towards fellow Bolton fans spoilt the day out for me. I took my 11 year old to his first away game but there were 10 or so fans behind me that chose to eff and geff throughout the game and had no regard for the kids sat around and as a result I'm not sure I'd take him again. Don't get me wrong I can swear with the best of them but I don't swear when I know kids are in earshot. At one point a guy in his 50s was threatened by about 5 or 6 of these 20 or 30 year old thugs just because he asked them to be a bit more respectful of the kids. Eventually the stewards got involved and one of them was removed for a bit which helped calm things down but it shouldn't have gone that far.....no doubt I'll get grief on here but I thought I'd have my 10 penneth worth anyway.

tricky one here, as a Dad I know what you mean - I hate hearing swearing around my kids.

IMO football is 'industrial' and with it come 'industrial' behavior.

 

I took miss smiffs to the grand final last week and there were half a dozen saints fans behind us f'ing and blinding throughout.

 

Now they were only in their late teens and having a word with them would not have bothered me, I do it regularly when I'm in the park or at the swimming baths with my daughter and there is similar behavior (once I did it and they were mumbling about doing me, when I went in the showers they saw me wearing nowt but my tag and quickly f??cked off).

I decided to say nowt at the rugby because it would be hypocritical, I have always said if you take your kids then you know full well what the atmosphere is like; you cannot change it just because your kids are there.

 

The flip side is if you are inthe famly stand then it is not as acceptable. Granted you don't have family stands at away games, but if you thought you could take your lad and not heard any swearing then I think you are being a tad naive.

I agree with Carlos, football is a working mans game giving us the perfect oppertunity to let some steam off after a hard weeks work

may as well enter my penneth then, football is for or used to be for the working class, now i aint arsed if people take kids etc etc but you cant expect grown men not to swear ,and as Carlos says you are in a different world if you think your 11y/o doesnt use or hear that language regulary. At Blackburn yesterday on the seats next to me were to old dears must of been 65/70 and in front of them were to older 'lads' when asked politely to sit down they replied 'fcuk off grannies and get back to you knitting'

Maybe Blackburn wasn't the best choice to take your son to his first away game,if you are bothered by swearing. The cheap tickets and local rivalry brought out loads of not reets, and all the lads seemed "up for it" and determined to have a good booze and crack. It really did remind me of an away day experience from the 70's. Personally i loved it,but maybe the likes of Arsenal or Reading away might have been a better choice for the lads debut, you know - ease him in a bit with a more sanitised atmosphere.

some of the actions of people can be out of order during an away game but again its a working mans sport and hence you get working men attending. i did see a blackburn fan all bust up yesterday however who was with his little girl. she must of only been about 7. surely thats out of order.

Just like Smiffs as a parent I understand where you are coming from on this topic. Football is becoming a family person???s game over that of the working class. There is never a right or wrong place to swear. 11 year olds have heard every swear word going and then some.

 

IMO Swearing is for those that are less educated and do not have the vocabulary to hold an intellectual conversation.

If you want to take your kids to a 'safe' sterile environment, then perhaps Blackburn away with 7999 other Bolton fans isn't the place. Being told to sit down/shut up/mind your language at a football match is unacceptable as far as I'm concerned.

 

I agree that your kids hear far worse every day in the playground. I don't know how old they are but they probably took it as a bit of a joke I know I thought it was hilarious as a kid listening to all the grown ups swearing. Going to the match was the only place I could get away with a bit of bad language in front of my dad. It was like a right of passage for me growing up and I wouldn't change it for the world.

 

Chances are, your kids absolutely loved it yesterday. Good on you for taking them but don't worry about them and their ears unduly!

must admit I have had the odd old person to tell me to shut the fuk up but I agree with every person on here who said its the way football is. Swearing is the best way to take the piss out of some dingles and have a go at the referee. Old people do it just a little politer. I think we shouldn't encourage to many 5 year olds to join in though because there is enough of them in the east lower swearing their heads off.

It is all about showing others respect in my opinion - nothing at all to do with football being a working man's game or not.

 

Would any decent father want to swear and be crude in front of their own child? Why then do they do it in front of other people's children?

 

Why would a group of strong healthy men want to spoil the enjoyment of two elderly ladies? Would they think it was so funny if it was their mother or granny who were being treated like that by others?

 

I know it goes on and I know it won't stop - but it still doesn't make it right.

I agree that you expect to, and hear loads of swearing. I've no problem with that at all, but, there were a group sat behind us and one of them was racially abusing EVERY non white player on the pitch, this NOT acceptable, it wasn't the odd bit of banter, it was pure hatred for everyone who wasn't white

In my opinion i think that clubs should state on the back of tickets with all the other rules that their may be strong language in and around the ground. just tocover their backs

 

If a player is haveing a bad game you can tell him he fooking useless or shit put i my opinion i would not bring any race or outside personal comments in to the situation.

 

What ever happens on the field and in the stands usually stays their until the following week. its usually only chance fans can comment on players and managers preformances

I don't think you're giving your child much credit here. At 11 they know what's right or wrong and they will hear it in the playground, street, infact anywhere nowadays.

As long as they are aware it's not big or clever or you catch them doing it, then fair enough. Smoking's a similar scenario except swearing rarely kills anyone.

Football's a place for a lot of fans to let off steam whether we agree with it or not, and a local derby is obviously going to be one of the larger platforms for this behaviour.

Also, it is nigh on impossible to segregate away fans into a family enclosure so maybe home games in the family stand would be better to take your kids to the match, don't you think?

And Happy, you really are so wrong there. I have a degree, a decent job, a moderate sense of decorum and a terrible potty mouth! :p

The guy that was behind it all was telling his own young teenage sons to tell the older guys behind them "tell 'em to feck off"...now that can't be right can it!

and not only did the tosser tell my son and his 11 year old mate to stay seated, he pulled one of them by the hood of their top.it was only later when plod pointed out i could have done him for assault....
