Alan Thompson

Would he get in our team? Worth a gamble?

I personally think he would be a good signing. He would benefit from all the latest fitness tecnology, diets, sports science stuff, etc at our club and Sam would revitalise him!

THE Celtic manager Gordon Strachan is set to reluctantly allow Alan Thompson to leave in January. The former Aston Villa and Bolton Wanderers midfielder has not played for the Parkhead side this season after being a first-team mainstay under previous manager Martin O'Neill.

Strachan said: "Alan would like to move on. There is no doubt about that and it is not a problem for me.

"He needs football at this stage and, unfortunately, we cannot give him that because the players in his position are doing well. But Alan has been a great professional and has done his job.

"Whether he will move in January, I do not know. Alan will know better than me the people who want to take him. It would not suit me to lose him in the January transfer window - it is not a problem to have him at the club. However, as I say, we are well up in Alan's position."

Thompson, 32, cost O'Neill ??2.75million in September 2000, and is one of the few remaining players from the side which reached the UEFA Cup final in 2003. O'Neill is now in charge of Aston Villa and will inevitably be linked with a move for Thompson. Since his return to management with the Midlands club O'Neill has signed three former Celtic players in Stilian Petrov, Chris Sutton and Didier Agathe.

I wouldn't touch him. Made his name from good free kicks and long shots, played well for us back then, but another one who's passing ability was poor. Now a lot older not for me.

I agree we need younger players in midfield. apart from Nolan our midfield options are 30+

Well put, he was good enough back then, but not good enough now

i think he would be a decent signing for us.

not good enough now bet he goes to a first division team Birmingham maybe 8)

I'd sign him, superb squad player

no to thompson

and no to bernardmendy

cant say i have seen him play resently but im sure sam will take a look and him would be nice to see him back if he can do a job

we don't need squad players

we need players who can play regularly in the first team

I thought thompson had about a dozen good games in the prem for us

he was nowt special then, and he's going to be even slower now, as well

no thanks

I remember Thompson's first touch for England v Sweden in Gothenburg which was met with a very large "Get that shirt off Thompson, you have no right to wear it you ****** ****", off a very well known BWFC fan !!!! and a chorus of boo's from the England end of the ground. We got beat 1-0

I'd sign him, superb squad player

FFS how many midfield 'squad' players can one club accomodate!

I loved Tommo back in '95 (man 8) ) But times have moved on, we've got better and he's got older. Thanks but no thanks.

we don't need squad players

Of course we do. When United were in town, top of the league and at full strength, we had Johan Smith on the bench. The writting was on the wall and we quite rightly got dicked. And you don't think we need squad players!

your point?

it wouldn't have mattered a fcuk who was on the bench - the starting 11 were destroyed

we need players who can play regularly in the first team

i'm sure I said that before

this way we can have the greek, idan tal and one or two of the displaced current middle 3 on the bench, not that having better subs would have made us any better against united

i hope this is a little clearer for you now

It makes it perfectly clear that you think modern day football is all about your starting XI. Modern day football involves terms like "squad rotation" and "tactical substitutions". Look 'em up.

We need to improve the first XI and also the quality of the squad.

Tommo is far too slow for us - the last thing we need is another slow player.

I'd be happy if we signed Mendy - biggest priority for us is a decent right back and a creative midfielder.

Oh how time eats away at the memory.

Mendy was pretty good going forward but could not defend for toffee.

but he is also 4? years older and experienced, plus he's now played for france so he cant be all bad...

Ibrahim Ba also has played for france!

But i agree with what you were saying he was young and inexperienced when he was here on loan, he probably has developed his game somewhat since then!

Would you pay the reported ??3.5M that PSM want?

He hasn't.

We could stick him in at left back, as a replacement for our 4 other replacements.
