It took me 6 days to get one last July in Helsinki for a trip to St Petersburg. I was initially asked to pay 125€ but it only cost 85€ when I went to collect it. I was told that prices for UK citizens can change daily and that it's always more expensive for people from UK, Ireland, Denmark, Iceland and Norway than for other Europeans. The visa application asked for proof of valid insurance but they told me that I wasn't required to provide it although they insisted on this requirement from the Belgian and Finnish friends I was with. Dunno why? You have to have an invite from a hotel or someone living there for the visa but this wouldn't be a problem on an organised trip.

The russian embassy only accept cash and postal orders and take upto 3 weeks to process. I went straight down to London when we got back from Rabotnicki and paid ?45 cash to have my visa & passport sent back within a week - and i'm still waiting for it now because the the bloody postal strike.

It is possible to pay ?95 to get the visa processed same day but you have to pick it up between 4 and 5pm. I would personally rather go to any country where you don't need to bother getting a visa
