Am hoping to go to New York in early october. Has anyone got any tips for where/where not to stay? I've been told its best to stay between 34th and 58th Street. Thought had found a reasonable priced hotel in a good location - Regency Inn - but looking on trip advisor (which I know isn't always unreliable!) it sounds like you wouldn't let a dog stop there.

 

Am hoping to go for 5 nights, expecting to pay between ?100 and ?150 a night.

 

any other suggestions about places to go/not go much appreciated too! Of course 4 of the days we are there will be taken up by shopping and the Sex & the city tour!

we stayed at hotel 373 last year on 5th St/34th, underneath Empire State, paid too much (?180 pn), next time we would try Greenwich area & I'm sure we could get same value @ ?130ish. Great location, though. Superb "Irish" Pub v close, ludicously drunk. It shouldbe illegal to be so tiddled. With the ace Metro, it doesn't make much difference. Best City on the planet (of the places I've been)

Back on topic, Ali, google Hotel thirty thirty. It's right near the Empire state building. Lovely accomodation and for a very reasonable price. There is a restaurant downstairs with very friendly staff. Quick factoid - it used to be the dance studio where Madonna first started out.

We stayed there years ago when it was called the Pickwick. It's a good location, a couple of blocks from Central Park.

It's not anything fancy and the rooms are a quite small but it's a decent clean hotel and cheap by Manhattan standards.

we stayed at the grand hyatt , excellent but expensive that 33 place that has been mentioned is meant to be ok.

 

it is a brlliant place.

 

get tickets for the open top bus if it is nt too cold you see everything and can get off and on when you want.

 

ground zero is incredibly moving especially in a place which has so much tacky stuff.

 

do your shopping at macys but get a visitors card so you get an extra 11% of the ?18 calvin klein jeans.

 

even if budget is an issue stay as central as possible you will be a lot of travelling and walking it is nice not to have an extra hakf and hour each end of each day.

 

do not book any show tickets before you go can get them cheap over there.

and the open top bus ride as Ani says is a must, don't get off in Harlem though, well do, but I didn't, because a group of black lads were making pretend guns with their fingers and taking out people on the top of the bus, wouldn't have minded but they were all in their 20s, and big bastuds

 

do not under any circumstance get anything other than a yellow cab for a taxi, some bloke did us to the tune of $120 for what should've been a $35 ride, all them notes look exactly the same, the only difference between $5, $10, $20 etc is the number on them

you'll prob be dissapointed by the statue of liberty, do the statten island ferry instead of paying for one that goes round the bay

If you want cheap and nasty cheerful, wait until you get there and book your first night in a motel If you like it book again, if you don't, move on.

And if you're going to spend hundreds of pounds to go all the way to NY for shopping, why not use that money, plus your shopping allowance, and spend the day in Mcr instead?

I had a shit in a bar in LA and it stunk, anyhow I was about to flush the chain when I realised there wasn't one so I sat there for ages trying to work out how the flushing system worked, after a while I decided I would make a run for it and leave the mud castle for one of the cleaners to get rid of. As soon as I stood up, the bog flushed itself

I've been to NY 4 times & I love the place. It does'nt happen as much now as when I first went in 1990 but having a beautiful yankee babe saying to you " Talk to me I love your accent " still brings a smile to my face.

Not sure about where I shat in NY, but the only thing I'd add to the above is get yourself to a sporting event - obviously what that is depends on the season.

 

We went to see the Rangers and it was excellent.

The Waldorf Astoria, and very pleasant it was as well.

she wasn't a babe but some waitress whom served us in this restaurant, chased us down the street after we'd left, just because she loved the accent and wanted to hear some more of it

 

a subway attendant also told me that they speak the king's english over there after I asked for a ticket for the tube

 

a woman on the tube gave me a massive b?ll?cking in one of those proper manhatten/italian style accents, but it wasn't my fault, stood up on the tube and it kept shaking and i fell back and ripped the paper she was reading in half

Going over next week. We are staying at the hotel Walcott on west 31st street, 2 blocks from the Empire State Building. It was the best value we could find and we booked it through opodo.

One of my all time favourite places to release the mud bullets is on an aeroplane. Watching people squirm when they enter the bog brings a smirk to my face everytime.
