He has scored 11 goals in each of the last 2 seasons, does not look to have great pace, has played for a load of middling type european clubs, and you can make an opinion of a player within 3-4 games and I have seen nothing to tell me he is worth 12million, that is 4 million more than we paid for Anelka, and this lad could not lace his boots.

p.s. be very happy to be proven completely wrong.

It seems to me that our chairman and owner are allowing Megson to spend 'well over the odds' [ just my opinion ] to sign the players he wants. It makes me wonder if Big Sam refused to pay over the odds for younger players and thats why we got classier older types whose prices where a lot fairer.

We are actually building a much younger squad... but definately an expensive one!

At the end of the day I don't care how much we pay... I'm not paying... but I do share the grave concerns about this lad just from Euro2008. He looked a donkey in the few minutes I saw of him. Hope he was ill or something :pardon:

This is the same striker we tried to sign last January after the sale of Anelka. They bumped up the price then when they saw we got ?15m, apparently the club told them to f off.

Nice one :good:

Just a bit of speculation on my part but -

Braaten is supposed to be in talks to go to Toulouse.

Maybe the transfer is actually something like ?8 million for Elmander plus Braaten valued at say ?4 million - to make ?12 million.

And before anyone says Braaten is not worth 4p let alone ?4 million - I know - but the values of 'make weights' in transfer deals are often 'manipulated' shall we say - so that agents and previous clubs, etc get their share from the deal (allegedly I best add).

don't forget there is around twice as much guaranteed money from being in the premiership than when Allardyce was in charge

Players, agents and selling clubs are all aware of this fact. Maybe 10 mil is the new 5 mil, and we got Cahill for the equivalent of 2.5mil

If it's true I think it will be a good signing, even if he costs ?12 million. Some on here might end up eating their words.

Lets stop pissing about.....pay the money and bring Eidur back home.....

I don't think Eidur's scored 10 goals in his last 75 games - and thats playing in "quality" sides. He isn't the answer.

no ones writing him off just stating that 12 million is about 6 too much

Six quid is fook all in the whole scheme of things.

Give your head a shake - who wuldn't welcome him back with open arms!!

Imagine him playing in the hole!!!

ye, his through balls would be sublime to our potent strike force of Davies and, err....

The Reebok ain't that bad. :D

Eidur's a great player - but he isn't the 12-15 goals a season player we need.Admittedly if we had a striker like Anelka, and we had Gudjohnsen playing in the "hole" then that would be tremendously joyous. :good:

My mistake, I must have dreamt all that talk of signing strikers.....

I agree he isn't a 12-15 goals a season player - but he could create that many for a quality striker. Would rather sign him +1 than Elmander, Baros and Saha.

He's a Megson-style striker. A big man who puts himself about and willing to run around/track back.

Wil he score goals? I suspect he will if the crosses come in. Horses for courses.

F?ck me some people are predictable, its the same negativity on each and every thread....

Rewind 6 months, people were slating Megson for spending ?5m on a young centre half with only a bit of Prem experience.

Now there is talk of us breaking the bank for a striker, and most people (football experts of course) have made up their minds about the lad Elmander after watching him play out of position in a poor Swedish team.

As utterly clueless as some people believe Megson to be I have a damm sight more faith in his judgement than most on here.

Did he really say we could get Eto'o??

ARE YOU ON GLUE?

Well said, that man.

Add this to the fact that Megson is chasing younger players and getting them on long contracts: the actual cost of a player per year of a contract isn't as high as it seems. A ?10m player on a 5 yr deal is only like getting a ?6m one on a 3yr deal in terms of cost per yr.

Eto doesn't look that special to me the last few times I have seen him.

In a bizarre twist Barcelona were said to be readying a bid for Elmander just before Euro2008

Everyone thinks the grass is greener etc etc

Klose has looked poor playing in his normal position in this tournament. Baros looked a world beater in the previous one. Can't judge a player exclusively on how they do in a tournament like this.

Elmander does look the hardworking type and he is most probably a better finisher than Kevin Davies. Seeing as he is 27 I think ?8-?10m is not unreasonable.

As someone else said, Megson's record on transfers to date means he has earned some trust on this.

Think I am the main culprit in questioning the Elmander deal, I am one of the most non negative posters on here, but it ssems an awful lot of money for a lad who has not performed well in the Euros, does not have any real record of scoring shed loads of goals and who's playing style is not dissimlar to Kevin Davies, I would have thought real pace would be a main requirement of any striker we sign, I really hope I am wrong but cannot help questioning whether he is the right player at the right price, saying that if we get Saha/Elmander/Davies and one other I would prefer Eidur, I will not be to dissapointed.

This is either the 'new reality' or we are indeed paying a bit over the odds. Not sure myself.

Despite looking good signings Taylor and Cahill both seemed expensive for reserves at the time.

?10-12m for Elmander just doesn't strike me as good value either. All well and good saying 'trust Megson's judgement' but Heskey, Angel, a thousand others have in their time commanded similar fees.

I'd rather sign Crouch for that sort of cash.

Mounts, wasn't intended as a dig at you, but a more general rant....

I'd agree Elmander, doesn't look blessed with real pace. Other than that I can't make any real judgements on the lad as I've not seen much of him...My point is that Megson will have had the lad watched on many occasions. He's obviously very keen on him as he looks set to go back for him after missing him out on him in Jan.

A few people have said he has a look of Davies, hard working etc. Is that a bad thing? If he can do those sorts of things and bag 10-15 goals I don't think anyone will be complaining.

But someone with pace, be it Saha in addition to him would be a very interesting combination

Crouch would be on 70k a week. Elmander won't be.

So 70k a week for 4 years in addition to the ?10m fee. You're not comparing like for like.

Sun have it in todays paper aswell that its him. Would be happy though if we brought in another forward like Saha aswell but up to now i don't see what megson sees in him.
