November 7, 200817 yr Used to go 3 -4 times a year to a company we owned up until 2005, though that was situated in a town called Morris 50 miles SW of Chicago. When we got chance to stay in the city over the weekends I always found it to be a clean vibrant place. It has quite a cosmopolitan mix with a large Irish, German and Polish influence. Great resturants and nightlife just North of the centre. Avoid the financial sector at dark and southern suburbs anytime at ALL cost. The southern subhurbs are black ghettos and you will not be welcome. The museum is a must as is a baseball game at wrigley field, home of the Chicago Cubs which is a very traditional old fashioned venue. If you are into Jazz there is no better place. Take a good selection of clothing as when I was there once in 1998 in October it was 68F on Friday evening and then 25F the following morning. The airport is huge, make sure you get there in plenty of time for your return flight at Ohare. Inbound international flights arrive at a different terminal which is about 1 mile away from the main one so you can get a false impression of how busy it really is.
November 7, 200817 yr Easy for me to say now that you've, er, outed me, but my stay in Chicago was for nothing more exciting than 8 hours connection wait outbound and 4 hours homeward bound.

November 7, 200817 yr Regular visitor when I worked for the Milwaukee mob. Good scooter shop called Scooterworks in Chicago. As others have said, great place for Jazz and Blues but fecking freezing in winter. Wind howls off the water and it's like being flash frozen. Went watching an England game at this massive Irish pub once (seem to recall it was called O'Douls Bar). Masses of England singing in one bar - Scots and Irish in two seperate rooms upstairs and Croats giving us the evils from the other downstairs bar. Was sure it would all kick off but seem to recall that all four won so everyone went away pissed and happy. Almost forgot - great mexican food in the mexican quarter. I think the best one was called the Azteca. Had grandma in the backyard hand making fresh corn chips!

I've never been - not that way inclined.
November 7, 200817 yr Only Chicago O'Hare airport for a connecting flight. But dont do it in winter, an airport to be avoided at all costs December to March, unless you want spend a lot of time looking out of the window at the snow and the yellow flashing lights of the snow ploughs
November 7, 200817 yr One of my favourite cities. As mentioned above, nice and warm in sunny, brass monkeys in winter. Great architecture, mixing the old with the new skyscrapers - Sears Tower, John Hancock building (one has a cracking restaurant at the top) with Wrigley building. River running through the centre that they turn green on Paddy's day. Loads of parks very close the the centre. Again as mentioned above, avoid south side, but to be honest, it's a lot better than it used to be, like most American cities. If you're thinking of going soon, baseball season has finished, but normally it's easy to get tickets for their ice hockey team, The Blackhawks. Hope this helps.
