That's gone up considerably.

It was only ?1.5m a couple of days ago!

As reported by your good self: http://www.wanderersways.com/forum/index.p...st&p=586520

Don't shoot the messenger!

Anyway - it could be ?1.5 down with add ons!

I wasn't shooting anyone.

I was highlighting the varying valuations attached to players by different sections of the media! :p

love the fact you took the hit for that one !

Not happy with this one at that money, I think we should have set our sights higher and used most if not all our january budget on a top centre half, not having a decent centre half to pair with Cahill could have us in trouble.

Is this guy actually any good?

Is this guy actually any good?

Well I go by the comments of my Hammers mates and they said at 1.5M they wouldn't miss him and at 3M they are laughing at us all the way to the Icelandic Bank !!!!

Is this guy actually any good?

I'd like to ask this too please

I am friends with a Spurs fan who says he's rubbish and it doesn't seem he's had much of a career at West Ham either.

I take it he's just gonna provide cover... in which case it's an extremely disappointing aquisition.

What happened to quality not quantity.

If he's not better than Meite [ and it seems he's not ] then justification of this one is gonna be difficult Gazza.

He was an outstanding U 21 at Coventry whose career seems to have been sidelined (like a lot of young defenders) at Spurs and West Ham. I seem to remember him being a tal lad and good header of the ball which we need at the moment.

Ok yes I'm not gonna go through my thoughts on that one as it's all in the past. I didn't really rate Meite that highly as a player to be honest.

The reason I mad the comparison was because I was really hoping someone would tell me he's better than Meite and they actually quite rate him.

You can see where I'm coming from.

Gary has made a bit of a song and dance about telling us that the squad he inherited we had the numbers but not the quality

He's been struggling admirably since cutting the squad and I'm happy with his idea that building the numbers back up must be done in a way where we don't find ourself in the same position.

I know next to nothing about Davenport. I only keep reading/hearing people say he's a squad filler who West Ham won't miss :(

I dont think hes worth 3 million. Hes too injury prone

Dunno why we never tried to Resign Abdoulaye Faye, Stoke got him for 2 mill

That's the sort of answer I was hoping for... and yes we concede a lot of headers... I'll hang my hat on him challenging AOB on that basis now... I'm just after a reason to stop my initial thoughts that January may see us swell numbers but not better the first XI.

This time last year, I think most of us were greatly underwhelmed at us signing Cahill for c?5M, especially as he had spent a lot of time clogging around in the championship. He may turn out to be another decent player, he may not. I don't see that he will be any worse than Shittu, who we should also keep as well, unless another CB comes in, as we don't want to be left with just 3 CBs, because lets face it, the chances of Fojut getting a game are probably quite slim.

People are talking about the ?3M being too much, unfortunately that's the going rate for "young and english" these days.

There seems to be a few clubs in the mire financially, today Glasgow Rangers have put the full squad up for sale, there will be more cluubs and more players than ever available during this window, we should have waited to see if anybody else became available, Davenport could always have been signed at the last minute, as I cannot see a posse of clubs requiring his services.

We haven't actually signed him yet though have we, and there is nothing to say that we won't sign another centrehalf, which we may well do if Shittu is allowed to leave (I don't believe we will, but who knows)

The massive difference here is we signed Cahill amongst plenty of ringing endorsements, optimism and former clubs fans predicting good things.

I am sure I'm not alone in reading quite a few 'ordinary' reports from those ITK about Cal

it doesn't matter when we sign davenport, some will not be happy

sign him now it lacks ambition

sign him at the end it's a last ditch bid because we're desperate and not done enough throughout jan to secure players services

playing the waiting game in january is rather risky

seems megson cannot win with this one

seems he's also happy with cahill and aob as his first choice and happy to have shittu and davenport as cover

even more players will become available in the summer

waiting till then maybe an even better option

and if it makes anyone feel any better, I just sent an email to a west ham fan mate, saying I think we've been bummed paying ?3M for him, his reply:

"I don?t mate. He was quality for us when he came on loan a few years back, and has been decent for us since. He just needs first team football and didn?t have the opportunity to develop at Spurs. Trust me, I?ll be really sorry to see him go and at ?3m, you?ll be getting a good deal. Especially given the dross you currently have on your books!"

:) Thank you Zico

Even if you made that up, it's exactly what I wanted to hear ;)

I think most of us are underwhelmed by this signing, if it happens.

Can only hope he does a Davies and suprises the doubters.
