This myth that Bolton upset the big boys is getting more and more laughable by the day. It's getting as believable as our alleged thuggery.

 

As I said following the Spurs game, we are "rolling over and having our tummy's tickled" by the top 4 these days, and boy is it dull.

 

We had some great results in early Allardyce days. 2-1 and 1-0 victories back to back at Old Trafford. We haunted Arsenal for a couple of seasons including 3 back to back wins at the Reebok. Liverpool were a tougher nut to crack but the 2-0 win in 2006 was a great win, and properly welcomed Benitez to the english game. Chelsea has been less exciting, but draws at the Bridge in 2008, and 2007 were no mean achievements.

 

Saturday Man United oversaw our 13th loss in 15 games against the big 4 of the Premiership. Under Megson and Allardyce before we have come in for stick for "parking the bus", though the journo that labelled us with that for the United game this weekend was well wide of the mark. But away from home they are right.

 

We show no ambition against them. We show them too much respect. Allardyce's Bolton didn't give two hoots who they were, they were getting tackled, shoved and kicked out of the way if necessary. We wander around the pitch chasing shadows, missing tackles and giving away silly free kicks. Because we're a terribly poor, average team.

 

3 or 4 seasons back we had a mixture of the good, bad and ugly. Now we're just average throughout. Which means we lack anyone like Okocha, Campo, Djorkaeff or Anelka to raise their game against the big boys. We have a journeyman collection of middle of the road players - Samuel, Taylor, McCann, Steinsson, Davies and Andy O'Brien who don't have a game to raise.

 

They're decent performers. And on our day we can play a decent game. And if that day coincides with an off-day for an opponent we might even get a decent result (see Sunderland away, Boro away, West Ham away). But there isn't a decent football brain between us to lift the rest of the team and weather a top 4 storm.

 

Top 4 clubs are immense at denying you space, harrassing you, bullying you - despite this being an alleged strength of ours, and forcing you into mistakes. You only need to look at stats like our pass completion, possession and territory against these teams to see that we can't get out of our half or have a spell on the ball.

 

We miss the direction of the Allardyce team, the creativity of the Okocha's and the finishing of the Anelkas. It's replaced with the anonymity of the Megson team, the panic-stricken lump forward by Nolan and the composure-less Davies.

 

It hurts.

fuck the big boys, our season does not revolve around those games (currently)

 

we need to beat teams below and around us.

 

yes 'upsetting' the big teams is great, but its not the be all and end all...

 

 

i would be FAR more pissed off is our players were only up for it against the big teams, and couldnt give a fuck against the 'lesser' teams.

I agree with a lot of what he says, but he ruins it with the usual Nolan/Davies knocking.

 

Nolan has scored in two victories v united.

 

Davies was the man arsenal feared the most.

 

Also the run of bad results against the big teams started with FSA not Megson.

 

You also need to acknowledge that the big teams are the big teams because the can adopt their style of play againat different opponents, the FSA plan was a great succes for a while since they susses us out we, along with the other teams in the division have not come up with an alternative.

Stoke have done alright against the "big boys", perhaps he could explain that? Maybe they secretly have a couple of Galacticos?

I was confused by this at first, surely no journalist could come up with these inane ramblings, it just sounds like somebody moaning on a forum.................

 

As Homer points out this obsession with us and our poor record against the big boys is pretty much irrelevant, especially now as we only have Chelsea away. There are more important issues to concentrate on.

 

The sooner people realise that it is getting harder and harder to get anything off the top sides the better. Yes you can harp on about one off performances both this season with clubs like Hull and Fulham and ourselves with Allardyce, but more often than not unless the top sides have an off day and you are on form, you get nowt.

gotta be honest (at the risk of being labeled a "smegson idiot" ) cant argue with most of it, the exceptions are Nolan & Davies who i consider to be above the average.

I take exception to anyone who voices a negative opinion on Mr Megson is labeled a "idiot", i would be singing his name till my throat hurt if i could see any positives coming from the guy but i cant ,its negative football without the results, at least with the old management we had an end product but after 90 minutes of tedium but at the moment its 5 across midfield to finish with only a 0-1 loss.

I will keep going cause i always have but i have to be honest his brand of football is appalling

I dont agree with most of that rant. Megson is trying to get us playing better football with wingers and a decent striker upfront.

As for an average squad, I agree that we need more creativity but slagging the players off that we have now isnt going to make them better players. Its one thing that pi$$ es me of with a lot of the so called fans at the bok and that the fact that when we do something good they stay quiet yet then a player makes a mistake where on his back!

 

We do need more creativity but the problem is where is it going to come from? We get linked with players like Vucivic (Pardon the spelling) and Veloso but nothing ever comes off! we could just do with a Djorkaeff or Okocha but what premier league team doesnt so why continue to moan about it!

On a good day, they're enough to beat other teams around us. On a less good day, they run around aimlessly (eg WBA, Rovers, Wigan at home). Against the top-4, it's defence all the way and no results with few goals.

Big question is : Will they have enough good days to survive ?

Beat arsenal at home but lost away 2-1, drew at stamford bridge same as last season under Megson. In his last season we got 7 points out of 24 against the big four with most of the points coming at beginning of the season. We got dicked by united 4-0 and 4-1 that season.

Should of won that day We played superb and were a bit unlucky in the home replay iirc. Its not a shit record but i wouldnt put it as good as some are making out, towards the end of season when Allardyce had decided he was going thats when our record against them teams dipped.

we beat chelsea at stamford bridge too, so research/memory already not up to scratch

 

as for journeymen - samuel has only ever played for us and villa, taylor for luton and pompey - i think he used the word journeyman when he meant to say "players i don't think are that good" - djorkaeff was out in the cold at his 7th club when he came to us, anelka was hardly the most settled of players

 

i was a big fan of alladyce and what he did, less so of megson

We beat Liverpool 2-0 and Arsenal 3-1 at home in Allardyce's final season.

 

Two fantastic results.
