Unfortunately, there appears to be a reappearance of the Megson Out protests being planned on other websites and a minority of vocal 'fans' aiming to gather momentum in order to stage protests at the Liverpool game. I really hope this doesn't happen, despite being against his appointment, I do believe that we should hold our nerve and see where we are after 6 games or so. During which time I would like to see him get 100% support from the fans but this is looking decidely unlikely. Admittedly, we were poor on Saturday but we do have some decent players and may just eek out a result at Hull. At least WW isn't seeing the knee jerk fans planning a revolt, lets keep it together for the lads at Hull and against the Scousers, these will be difficult enough games without the protests!

At the end of the day, like him or loathe him: Megson is actually fulfilling the requirements of his employers.

2. Maintain our Prem status with a higher finish in his 2nd season.

3. Transform the make-up of the squad into a more British based unit ie move away from having 5-6 Africans who'll piss off for ANC every 2 yrs.

4. Bring the average age of the squad down.

5. Introduce more Academy players to the squad.

6. Reduce the wage bill

 

He has done/is doing all those things.

 

Unfortunately, the standard of entertainment isn't what we want and this is the main reason for all the complaints. It wasn't always pretty in the past, either. I believe the manager and the club do want to change the style of play: who is to say it won't happen? Megson has achieved his other tasks so far.

It might be early on this overcast Wednesday but post of the day for me - just beating Bolty's above (I'm discounting by Hollands pies thread here!!).

 

Its too early to say how this season will work out but in Sean Davies and the Lee on the wing, there is hope that the quality of football and entertainment will improve as the season goes on too.

We (WW) are seen by the other (small-time) forums to be staunchly pro-Megson at any cost: I prefer to agree with Bolty in that we're more inclined to study the evidence.

 

My opinion is that Megson's reign is work in progress, and that most of us would want the progress to be a little quicker.

As Bolty rightly points out, you will struggle to find any of the perceived "pro-Megson" posters on WW who wanted Megson in the first place.

 

What a lot of the "Mugson" group seem to fail to recognise is the utter mess the club was in both on-and-off the field when he arrived. To survive in the first season with a game to spare was a minor miracle. The small but steady improvements since then are all a club of our size can hope to do. Sammy Lee went for the big-bang route and look what mess that got us into.

I think you'll find that most of the other forum users trawl through WW anyway and even post on here under different user names so whats the point in posting on theirs. Now that Rivals has gone, the Bolton News forum seems to be the most anti-Megson.

I think the next two weeks will be his most crucial time at the club. If he gets the players he needs then I will continue with my optimism. If not then things will start to look grim.

Save your time & effort, those people are not interested in the pen, just in jumping on the easy "sack the manager" bandwagon, as if ever worked at any number of clubs.

You haven't trawled very hard, the following was posted on Boltons second largest forum.

 

I hear a lot about how terrible Gary Megson is, well whoever says so is wrong. and here's why:

 

First a little history:

 

Sam Allardyce's Bolton were in a terrible state six months before he (Sam) left. Speed, Campo, JJ were all too old and Nolan had long since stopped performaing. Diouf was/is arguably the most over-rated Bolton player ever, HP at LB, NH at RB, etc... in short we were terrible. LSL came in and did appaulingly, he thought he was brilliant and could turn us into Liverpool in one transfer window with no money, no experience and no clue. Nolan and Vaz Te on the wings! One can't run for falling over the other can't run. Napoleon in defence etc... Bottom of the hardest league in the world, no money and and shit team. In steps MEGSON.

 

Megson is brilliant because:

 

1) Managed to keep us up in his first season, against all odds, unbelievable achievment, he should be liked for this fact alone if nothing else. Despite losing a trully world class striker (Anelka)

2) Beat United at home first time in ages.

3) Dropped NH (terrible) brought in Steinsson (Excellent)

4) Turned JLS into a football player. I convinced he literally did not know where to stand (on the pitch) before megson came in.

5) Brough in Cahill, one of the best ever Bolton signings, if we can keep him we could have a player at the world cup.

6) Kept hold of Jussi, Davies, and now Cahill.

7) He continually gets rid of poor players and replaces them with better ones:

- Nolan to Sean Davies and Mark Davies

- Diouf to Taylor

- NH to Steinsson

- AOB to ZK (likely)

- Others i can't even remember.

 

 

He addresses all the major problems with the team quitely and effectively, whether it be poor players, squad depth, over-rated players, unbalanced team, he doesn't draw attention to himself, keeps us up, and gives us a future at the top of English football by buying young, mainly English (doesn't matter but we will get a premium for them if we sell), athletic, hardworking players, unlike allardyce who allthough a good manager had to perpetually plug holes in the team caused by short term signings.

 

A note about Elmander. He is a good signing because he is the correct player for the job. We cannot carry a goal scorer. We've got a excellent target man (daives), so we needed an all-rounder someone who can score, create, play a bit. His first season wasn't good enough, not all his fault but, whatever, even if he doesn't come good this season you can never gaurentee a signing will be good even the best managers make mistakes. i.e. Berbatov! (I said he was shit at totenham, can't understand why people rated him. Crazy ) The point is Elmander was the right player whether it works out or not.

 

So the only criticism that can be levelled at GM is negativity but that's stupid, you can only go at teams if you've got the quality, you can only have quality if you've got the money, we haven't, end of. We could sign a load of West Brom players and play "nice-ish" football and get relegated before christmas but that would be stupid too. The reality is Bolton can be terrible to watch, -sometimes- but so are almost everyone outside the top 4, west-ham, middlesbourgh, fulham (complete myth they play nice football), newcastle, wigan, blackburn, stoke etc... i've watched all these teams last season they're all shit to watch. They have to be to survive.

 

So to those who hate GM i say but f.uck off. Gary Megson is top and Bolton will muller Sunderland on Saturday. 3-0.

 

And another thing the criticism of negative/defensive signings is short-sighted. You need to improve your defence to attack teams, the reason we are sometimes negative (on the rare occasions when we could be more attacking) is not because we don't have the quality upfront it's because everyone has to fall back to prevent us from conceeding, which invites teams onto us, and isolates Elmander/Davies. better defenders allow the rest of the team to get on with thier jobs, in thier natural positions rather than constantly having fall back and/or look over thier should to check whether AOB has fecked up yet.

I don't see as that matters, apart from getting the result wrong, his comments were based on Megsons time here rather than a 'knee-jerk' reaction to one result.

So IF Megson was sacked (I'm not saying he should be, he deserves more time IMO), who is considerably better that would work on a small budget (That rules out many options) and accept that we aren't a big club and will therefore be unlikely to attract star players? Any sugesstions anyone?

I don't think it's fair or ethical to discuss posts on other sites but in that post it says "in short we were terrible", we were that terrible we still qualified for the UEFA Cup. There's clearly a hole in that logic larger than Belladona's arnhaus, it can be safely disregarded.

I asked the same thing yesterday and at least twice last season, and I don?t think I every got an answer. It?s all well and good wanting to get shut but you have to replace and most of these clowns have no fucking idea who they want to replace him they just want rid and fuck the consequences
