Haiti

People seem to think it's funny as all that's been posted about it are jokes. That's pretty fucked up in my book but hey ho.

An estimated 45,000-50,000 people dead, with many more facing an uncertain future. Is there anything we can do? And should we bother? All the charities are fucking loaded anyway, hardly any cash would get to those in need. Should we just be making up jokes or should our humanity mean we should at least consider helping out in some small way?

Have any small white kids preferably british been hurt?

If not then it'll keep the press entertained til the next MP buys a house for his duck pond or the bins don't get emptied.

The earthquake itself was as bad it it possily could have been made worse by the horrific state Haiti has got it self into.

A quake of that scale would cause massive problems in the US but a place so delapedated and falling apart the people of Haiti stood little to no chance of surviving at times

According to BBC this morning there was shit loads of equipment etc at airport, but it wasn't getting through. Doesn't seem like there's a shortage of cash- just organisation.

Why can't they fly in shit loads of helicopters to take it where it's needed.

We struggle getting helicopters out to support out troops, I don't think there's much we can do on that front. It will mainly fall on the US, but given they've still to sort out New Orleans so I don't hold out much hope. But Haitians can hardly just move to Florida or elsewhere.

Be interesting to see what those folk so fond of the Dominican Republic make of it too.

in the nicest sense, fuck um.

the 6m we have donated should going towards saving the lives of our troops!

Part of me feels like that- then I heard a report on radio 5. A bloke with his daughter- bones sticking out of her legs, and her head split accross the top. No-one around in the hospital to help, and you could hear her moans; truly fucking shite.

How would I feel if something like that happened to us and I was in a similar situation with my little un?

Perhaps help should come with the proviso that the government fooks off, and a proper set up is installed that looks after its people

That's a very good point! It is the same with African countries who are struggling to feed their people yet their goverment swan around in Bulletproof Limo's and get their heads down in Mansions!

Why??

I agree our troops require more provisions etc, but we're talking about humanity here...

How many troops have died / been injured out there in the last few years and how many folk died or have been injured / made homeless in the last few days in Haiti??

These were ordinary people doing every day things - like you and me

Troops choose to join the army

They're both worthy causes IMO

homo, just think yourself lucky you were born in england

if youd been born in haiti, every chance you and your 5 kids are now dead

There's some cunts in the world but I didn't expect anyone with young kids to post anything like that. You represent everything I resent about this country.

Poor fcukers have not had it good for decades. Basket case from the times of Papa Doc Duvalier and his son, Baby Doc and their murderous Tonton Macoutes. With the poor conditions their excesses forced on the population, the poor sods would have been trying to shelter in balsa wood shacks against a fcuking earthquake.

Tragic and I'm sure the world will respond.

reading the beeb website it seems the concrete in the buildings may as wek have been sand for all the good it did.

those in the shanty towns were slightly better off as the materials weigh less than the 'concrete' buildings in the city.

places like the US and Japan put in dampening devinces to the foundations in Earthquake areas, sadly not the case in haiti.

couple of mates are there at the moment with the UK Search & Rescue Team. Word is; it's grim!

so choice of the money going towards somebody else's kids in another county over your own, you'd choose them?

surley you should look after your own before looking after others.

if that makes me a cunt, then so be it.

edit: though i do apologise for the way i put the point across.

news last night were pretty sad viewing

the helps on it's way but seems the island is that badly affected, ports and airports, along with some red tape that the help just isn't getting there quick enough

estimates 30,000-50,000 dead but way it's going with disease and the state of the place I wouldn't be surprised if that doubled in the next few months

not sure how far the ?6-10M we've given will go, but spose it helps

part from watching the news, not much I can do but feel sorry for em

that said, I'm not adverse to any Haiti jokes if anyone has them

lets not joke bout disaster / death / etc one day then knock it the next due to the numbers involved

ok

is the choice as black & white as it goes to haiti or our soliders?

probably not

we're helping out because we can

am sure our soldiers are getting some sort of backing as well

there's plenty of ways that ?6m could be put to good use in this country

but the Haitians probably need all the help they can get right now

The UK SART met up at Gatwick to fly out with all the gear etc. The 9 lads from Greater Manchester fire service made up a larger group consisting of firemen from about 8 or 9 different brigades.

The plane's take off was timed so that the landing coincided with the first light next day (Haiti time) because, whilst the airport was fully functional, the air-strip lighting was not.

Point me in the direction of anyone who's currently buried alive waiting for help in this country or anyone living in conditions like Port au Prince and you'd have an argument.

Get your head out of your ill-informed middle-class arse for a split second.

Fucking hell Carlos. We're talking about a difference of opinion here. Lighten up.

My house isn't really a luxury. I refer you to my first post; how is one supposed to help when money isn't necessarily the answer? Then I refer you to my previous post.

Anyway, fuck 'em.

The main news story today has been how the airport is gridlocked, hampering aid efforts.
