Haiti

People seem to think it's funny as all that's been posted about it are jokes. That's pretty fucked up in my book but hey ho.

An estimated 45,000-50,000 people dead, with many more facing an uncertain future. Is there anything we can do? And should we bother? All the charities are fucking loaded anyway, hardly any cash would get to those in need. Should we just be making up jokes or should our humanity mean we should at least consider helping out in some small way?

The main news story today has been how the airport is gridlocked, hampering aid efforts.

due to mass amount of aid already being provided and the fact the that the airport is not fully functional?

so the answer to your original question (if money is not the answer and aid cant get to them) is "not much else can be done"

glad we cleared that up.

The only realistic thing for the man on the street to do is give money

So who is doing the most out there with the cash, using it for the right things? Thats what would sway it for me.

Personal opinion is we should try and help whoever needs help in any situation like this, regardless of race, religion, sock colour etc

The one thing that puts me off is many of these charities seem to be sitting on piles of "our cash", I know theres got be be some business sense behind it all but surely, theres always someone who needs it??

FWIW IMO it is up to the individual who he/she gives aid to, it's also up to the individual whether they laugh at jokes regarding a tragedy, people have been doing it for ages now.

so has anyone got any Haiti jokes?

I can empathise a bit with these Haitians. Last time I had 40 aftershocks I couldn't find my house either.

Last week the government paid out ?48m on "cold weather payments" to working age people of the UK.

Bolton was part of this area. Bolton have had 4 of them recently.

In total, govenment will have paid out over ?250m this winter to these people (Not counting the pensioners who get ?125+ each) and that will get even bigger before winter ends.

?6m doesnt seem alot when you look at that.

Come on mate lets let the dust settle

I decided to try and take a cheque from my business today to our bank...they usually have special envelopes for stuff like this but they haven't got them in yet...they reckon by the end of next week all the major banks will take donations. Hth!

Please help me understand

Why is it that the BBC only try to find out how many have died?

Why do the BBC describe deaths as "casuaties" in Afghanistan, but "fatalities" in Haiti?

Thread cleaned up and pinned.

So the posts that didn't agree with you and a couple of others have been binned

athy, looks to me like theres a range of opinion left on the thread......

we could use another mod

are you volunteering?

Commie bastards?

The UK SART met up at Gatwick to fly out with all the gear etc. The 9 lads from Greater Manchester fire service made up a larger group consisting of firemen from about 8 or 9 different brigades.

Been hearing the tales.

One of the lads parents live next to my in-laws.

:nea: :nea: I actually think the 6 million our government have pledged is a disgustingly shameful amout given the billions they have shelled out to bail out british banks.

Well you cant argue with that :good:

I'd have said that's an apples & oranges argument, same as the previous troops one.

It's just a shame that so few noticed these people were on their arse before this.

Fuck that, the purpose of the thread changed once Sluffy put his post in. I changed the title, pinned it and deleted everything that wandered way off topic, utterly meaningless posts, jokes, people disagreeing with jokes etc. I left all the opinion in but the purpose of the thread changed. Some people are only to eager to have a dig.

You could, the bank bail out will eventually return a profit, the other option was to send the country back into the dark ages.

Seeing kids hurt and people in there own country hurts .People just going about there every day life struggling to make ends meet .i have donated a fiver not much but it helps

I have left this in here as I wanted Sluffy's post to be at the top of the other thread :good:
