I live just over the road from this and the daft thing is they're keeping both stores open (for the foreseeable future at least). There's 2 stores selling exactly the same stuff literally within 20 yards of each other.

They are more of a franchise operation than a retail chain, I would guess the two stores are owned by differant people.

But while I doubt you'd ever get exclusivity for a spar, I'd say a franchisee could certainly expect not to have another franchisee to open up next door.

Quite often the highlight of my evening when in Manchester, especially after a brisk walk back from the Academy kegged up.

They had such a streamline operation making those kebabs. Awesome!

it comes as no surprise that this peice of incompetence was down to BT!

dealing with them at the mo trying to get some cables shifted, they're all as bad as each other TBF.

 

UU electric are by far there hardest to get out to move their cables.

Can you blame them? I presume they need to alert the local authority highways of their intention to rip up a road in order to cause as much inconvenience as possible to those whose taxes pay for the road.

 

Let's face it, the Local Authority never turn around to the digging teams of each utility and say, we'll close the road for a month. During that time you can lay what you want and then we'll resurface the road after which you can't dig there for another 5 years.

 

Local Auth. gives said permissions and then other department of Local auth. then (however many days/weeks/months/years later ask them to move them.

 

I'd be bloody difficult with you too!

but that's exactly what we're doing.

 

We're (well Watkin jones those trying to rather daftly build the new tesco are paying for it) widening out the junction at longcauseway and worsley road, BT, UU, Cable and Wireless and Virgin all have cables in the existing footway.

 

it's costing the developer about ?400k+ to get the cables moved

 

they've all got the money (about 3 months ago in some cases) they said they'd be on site a the end of august but no sign of any of the contractors on site they don't need any TMA notifications as they are coming in under our contractors notifications.

they do in fairness, where possible, but not always possible either, all the utilities don't go in the same direction or at the same depth, but joint operations are carried out and planned where possible, I deal with this all over the place and in my experience, Bolton is one of the best at trying to minimise disruption, but in any case, if certain utilities say they need to dig up the road, then they dig it up and there isnt much the council can do about it,only be notified about it and insist the road is full width re surfaced if it comes under section 58. the council highways depts get all the flack for something they can only try and control, and i can tell you they are as keen as mustard with late fines certain jobs have to be done with a window of a few weeks,no matter how soon after someone else has been in there to do something else,and that doesnt take into account emergencies and the unexpected jobs that crop up. but people just see it all as "the council has dug up the road again!"
