John O'groats To Lands End

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I'm a Bolton season ticket holder of 35 years & last September I started cycling again (I used to been a keen cyclist but packed in when I was 18). Since September I've been gradually improving my fitness & mileage with a view to doing a charity bike ride & over the past couple of weeks I have finally made the commitment & booked my travel & accommodation for the ride.

So, commencing on the 23rd July 2011, I will be cycling from John O'Groats to Lands End & I will be doing this in honour of NAT LOFTHOUSE whilst raising money for Cancer Research.

I still need to set up a website & blog.... I have started to construct a website but I'm struggling to find the time at the moment, so if anyone is competent at setting up websites & is prepared to offer some of their time to help me I would be very grateful.

Once the website is up & running I will post a link on here.

Maybe easier to just set up a just giving account.

980 miles on a push bike..

Good luck :)

Well worth doing though!!

HBIYB?

Good luck.

You'll need it if everything else we've done "for Nat" this season is owt to go by.

All the best

As said above, get a Justgiving account...simples.

A guy from our running club completed t'other day - a week earlier than he'd orginally planned! He's now riding 280 miles back to meet his missus. My one piece of advice would be : Use Chamois Buttr.

Also a wonderful cause so thank you and good luck.

Did you get dry bummed in Bamber Bridge?

Fair fucks for doing it, thats tough and especially for such a worthy cause. I'll probably throw a tenner at it at some point...

BUT if it's in honour of Nat, why not a dementia charity like Alzheimers etc?

It's like the great unmentionable, no-one dares say our hero wasnt the great strong bloke he was

TBH dunno about anybody else I fear that more than anything

Prob would have been less painful!

It got to the stage that my legs were aching so much I needed to stop a minute, but then sitting back on the saddle was more painful than the aching legs.

Prob would have helped if I'd some training first.

Oh and by the fuck did I have an ale that night!

First 24hr race I did, I didn't know about Chamois cream. Let's just say that the Johnny Cash song 'Ring of Fire' sprang to mind.

apparently jay thats the easy way to do it, due to which way the wind blows, starting at john o groats to lands end is the hardest.

as scooby doo says 2 of our mates are doing now for help for heroes and christies, they found it hard going and after 6 days passed through bolton.

do you have to stick to a certen route or go anyway whats the mileage :good:

I reckon it's quicker if you stick to the route.

You know your stuff fester ;-)

It's also technically uphill from J.O.G. to L.E. because L.E. is higher above sea level than J.O.G.

No, you can go anyway you want, I think the shortest route is about 860 miles, but that means using lots of very cycle unfriendly dual carriageways.

My route isn't that much further but hopefully will be a little safer & far more scenic (but much hillier too).

who will sponsor me if I do it on a motorbike non stop?

Me

Cos you'll run out of petrol after about 200 miles and have to push it the rest of the way.

You did say NON stop.

Have a 20 spot from me on completion.

I'd be well up for it mate, obviously have to pit stop for refuelling like some clever so and so has pointed out, but at 120 miles for me as opposed to 200

who will sponsor me if I do it on a motorbike non stop?

Depends what sort of a motorbike, if its a 1300 big comfy armchair style bike im out if its a 125 that doesn't go above 60 and doesn't have a wind guard then I am in for a few quid.
