You will be shocked to hear this from a soulie. Saw them live at Manchester Opera House in 74 (I think - it was the Foxtrot tour anyway as they opened with Watcher Of The Skies with Gabriel in a really tiny pyramid on the end of a cherrypicker and soaring about the place in the dark with just a spotlight on him).

 

Along with a gig by Arthur Browns Kingdom Come, the most hypnotic gig I have ever attended. Not really my scene but you have to give credit for excellence.

Personally I think they are crap, even the Lamb Lies Down On Broadway is gubbins. BUT a friend begged me to listen to Stratch My Back, Peter Gabriel's album of covers and it's absoultey stunning. Even makes Elbow listenable.

I was always a bit put off by the whole 'prog rock' pretentiousness that surrounded some of the better stuff from that era. This is a classic example:

 

Saw Genesis at Hamden Park in the late 80's supported by Paul Young, was a great gig apart from being in Glasgow
