Just got back from watching My Bloody Valentine at the Apollo. On my way in, a mate asked me if I had my earplugs. I thought he was joking until I saw that a good 50% of the crowd were wearing them (the 50% who looked old enough to have seen them before). I can't quite believe how loud it was. Surely there is some sort of legal limit on it? Managed to get some earplugs in the end but even with them I reckon my ears will ring for a week. My previous loudest was Leftfield at a festival years ago but tonight took the piss!

Am I missing something here, why does a band need to be so loud you need earplugs?

That's what I said. Rather than making your entire audience wear ear protection, why not just turn it down a bit? Maybe I'm just getting old? It's a bit like when people eat curries which are so hot they can't possibly taste it. No word of a lie, I feel sick from the bass rattling my throat.

Wu Tang Clan at the Apollo It didn't bother me much at the time because i was a mixture of stoned and pissed,

 

but for the next couple of days after it felt like someone was bumming my ear with a vibrater.

I was warned how loud they would be, so took my free ear defenders gladly. I only put them in when I went to the front to take photos but when I went to the back and took them out , I put them steaight back in.

 

It was very good though.

Saw MBV on the Rollercoaster tour with Jesus & Mary Chain, Dinosaur Jr and Blur back in early 90's and would put them as most uncomfortable.

 

They were saying in interviews at the time that they were experimenting in feedback to try and resonate body parts.

 

I would say the loudest was probably Chemical Bros or Prodigy supporting Oasis at Knebworth.

You can certainly crank up the amps with digital music compared to guitars.

 

edit. Thinking about it Chemical bros would win that one as was still outside the perimeter supping cans we had taken and the ground was shaking

Last time I saw them at the Apollo 3 or 4 years ago they were almost whispering compared to the 70's!

Never saw them but was always told that Killing Joke were the loudest live.

Manowar were that loud they set fire to the sound system at the Astoria in London.

Rancid were loud

Sunn0))), and I'd be surprised if tests did not prove that they are in fact the very loudest. Low frequency rumble which doesn't so much pierce but vibrate. You can feel it in the soles of your feet as well as hear it in your ears. I saw them in the underneath of this bar near the main station in Glasgow; the venue had warning signs up and gave out earplugs on the way in for those who wanted them. I would basically not recommend anyone to go and see them or to listen to them unless you are very open to completely new and weird stuff - it barely counts as music - but unforgettable as a live experience.

When the Syndicate first opened,the sound system was ridiculous.

 

Sure it broke some kind of law.

 

Its bad enough dealing with a comedown,nevermind ringing ears...

 

Stereophonics the first time at the MEN (2001) was ear popping too.
