Crowds

Seem to be well down at a lot of clubs already - 10k at Burnley yesterday, sub 14 at Boro, sub 15 at Birmingham. Can see us dipping below 15 too if we don't go on a run. Not surprising either in this economic climate and given most match day prices seem to be 25 to 30 quid (Leeds yesterday was 36 quid I think for Sheff Wed for a lunchtime TV game - and funnily enough there were 10 thousand fewer there than for their first game).

I think it's time those who run the game got real and recognised that most people haven't got that kind of money to piss away. We're basically reliant these days on good season ticket sales cos at those prices few floating fans are likely to be tempted along.

  • Accounting for inflation it is....."in real terms" as the club would probably suggest

  • I'm not following your logic. They charged what they could get away with in the Prem - to a max of 39 quid for the top games in the upper tier. That's not 'cheap as fuck' to most Boltonians. We're not

  • Of course they did. They're a business. I was disputing your assertion that they kept prices 'cheap as fuck'. Compared to what? The top clubs with fan bases nothing like ours? And now we're not at the

A town our size, with our tradition etc should be able to pull in at least 20k every week.

I'm not sure that the size of the town really matters that much when there are so many clubs sharing our catchment area. Blackpool sold 10,000 season tickets at half price. It's the only way to pull in more punters. You've got to practically give tickets away when you're competing with the likes of Utd and City.

It does if there's a tradition stretching back over 130 years tho I think. There's still a lot of dormant support out there - we've all got family and friends who check the score on a matchday. It's persuading more of those to get to games. Charging 3 or 4 times what it costs to go to the cinema I'd suggest is not the best way of doing that.

It's fine for Norwich to charge £50 who they competing against? And so they should be getting 25 k plus. We are in a hotbed of football clubs and its hard

Where's that from?

Would be interested to know how many Bolton families would class themselves as Wanderers, compared with City or United. I mean proper fans, who actually go occasionally at least. Despite there being too many Reds, I still think you'd find a big majority across the borough would say BWFC. Most who said MCFC would probably be bandwagon jumpers from the past couple of seasons, so don't count. Tho I know a few apparently defected to Maine Road in the 60s when we were on the decline and Franny Lee was sold there.

Maybe it should be a Census question next time?

You will never get a solus ticket price cap across the board.

However I think you may get an away ticket price cap through. It would mean no club could charge more than say £25 adults for away fans. As all clubs away support would benefit it would appeal to many without impacting the big clubs gate receipts that much.

£25 should be the max in this league

What are you basing that on?

If Bolton made tickets £15 for home games, I don't think our attendances would increase by more than 2 or 3 thousand.....you would then just have folk complaining that it's not £10

well considering we paid £22 -£28 last year for away games £25 seems fair you don't think? You want to pay more

If we did them for next to nothing, then we would generate far less matchday income than we do now, and as we don't have a pot to piss in, then I guess we need every penny we can get. At current prices we look like getting c15K for home games, take the price down to just £10 them we might just touch 20K, but we would generate less money overall, which is pretty bad business practice.

Sadly I think you are right. I know a lot that don't go for a combination of reasons shit/expensive/cant be arsed/working/have something better to do. Of course everyone is entitled to do what they want. I don't think crowds are that bad. I'm sure it was lower under Allardyce in the championship?

I'm not saying I want to pay more, if I have to I will, I'm not arsed.

I just wondered where £25 came from.

There is always the choice of not going to places if you think they charge too much though

I'm talking about the longer term though. Match day income is still only a small percentage of the parachute money anyway - tho will become a bigger proportion if we don't get promoted soon. Speculate to accumulate some more fans - who in turn will start paying into the club once they become regulars.

eldest's season ticket cost me 80 quid,  i bring the younger ones when i can, and for a lot of games I can get tickets for a tenner (as can most)

of all the things to have a go about, I dont think ticket prices is a fair one, think they do all they can on that score

There are £10 tickets available for home games aren't there ?

For what it's worth I agree, I think crowds held up well last season - I just don't want all the good work to turn to shit again.

£25 in my eyes is the mark ok yes you don't have to pay like a few did at Leeds and Ipswich last year which is fair enough

I'm not aware of 10 quid tickets - apart from once or twice a season for the less appealing night games usually. And as I said, I think the club have done a lot to bring more kids in, it's the adult on the day prices which need looking at - esp for upper tiers - as shown by the swathes of empty seats up there for most games.

10 quid tickets available for quite a few of the games, i paid  tenner for reading and a tenner for QPR so far this season, have a word with a local junior football club, they will only be to pleased to sell you one, as not only are they a tenner, but bolton give the club 4 quid of that back at the end of the season so its a good money earner for grass roots too.

  • Author

Thanks for the tip, I didn't know that. I'm a season ticket holder but I know plenty who aren't who would consider it for a tenner rather than 25 to 30 quid. Surely making more of these deals available - and publicising them - is the way to go?

Bolton have been far, far better than most when it comes to realistic pricing. There's an argument to say we had no alternative with so many other clubs on our doorstep, not least the rags, City, Liverpool etc.

I'd support any further initiative to increase support, even if I lost out financially as a season ticket holder. I would like to see the stadium full and our support base maintained and expanded.

Tickets are available for a tenner??

News to me.

Is this a secret handshake club?

It's certainly not advertised

Are we talking of the £10 tickets that go to junior football clubs? These are great offers I suppose it depends on how each particular club promotes these. Ours at moss bank seem to work pretty well

I think the Categories A, B and C are wrong, wing stand, centre and all that bollocks.

As a Bolton fan it doesn't matter to me who we play as I go to watch Bolton no matter who the opposition is!

No more than £25 in the upper tiers and £20 in the lower seems a fair price for all home games?
