I'm not sure how this whole 'being offended' thing works - but I'm pretty sure the issue of offence is decided by the potentially offended parties, hence Sindy dolls being deemed sexist would depend on a woman's viewpoint, golliwogs being deemed racist or not would be decided by a black person.

They reckon' the Golliwog was modelled after this caricature, from Jim Crow era America, that of a free Northern black who'd gotten himself a bit too big for his britches and no longer 'knew his place'...

I seem to recall that when there were protests about the use of the golliwog in Robertson's advertising the firm initially resisted and talked about their history. Someone obviously persuaded them otherwise and they dropped it forever. If they hadn't done so, protests would have continued. They accepted that they couldn't defend what had become indefensible.

When I had one it was a money box not a symbol of white supremacy. Similarly collecting Robertson's golliwogs was to get the metal badges. All the kids had them and probably didn't know black men existed.
