and now we're close to the bottom of the Championship

Boo

Gartside out!, Freedman out!  (I'm just saving time, as this is where the thread is headed)

Not my favorite trip but still a cracking day in the square and a great result. The stand off and battle between their fans to our left was much more entertaining than the match.

I have still never heard a proper explanation of what that was and why? Two main versions were the smaller section were Real fans and the other being it was between catholics and protestants.

Great trip that, and they have just beaten AC Milan away in the champions league.

Poles apart...............

The segregation that night was a joke. To think that both UEFA and the two clubs had approved it beforehand. I don't know why they didn't just put us behind the goal like they did with visiting supporters in the Champions League games in the following seasons. We had supporters in two stands on opposite sides of the pitch surrounded by Atletico fans who even managed to start fighting each other behind the goal before the game.

Rival ultra groups, I think. Happens a fair bit on the continent, rival ultras who support the same club but despise each other

Aye, I was reading a bit about Real and there is a bit of beef between the yoof and older Real ultras, the yoof are led by an Athletico fan who got into Real's ultras as he could cause more bother on a bigger stage?????

The trouble even made the Spanish national news that night:

My word, I was pissed on that trip. I travelled over with Squidgy (remember him?) - I vaguely recall us buying a bottle or Rioja each to alk to the ground with. I could hardly stand in that ground.

Amazing how quick getting twatted with a baton sobers you up though. My back was a right state the day after

Good old Eric haha

When I got back the Wife said," You're never going back there, I was worried sick" Looks like the ensuing argument will never arise.

I had to have a knee operation as a result, got knocked over a seat by the Spanish police/thugs. Funny how they all had tape on their helmets and shoulders covering the their numbers. Still a great trip though.

Even my mother phoned the next morning, and she never worries about me.

I was talking to Robben the next day and showing him my bruises. He's a lovely man.

Thinly veiled, I've been to Real Madrid's training ground :)

sounds like the departed, is there a real infiltrator at atletico as well?

I thought it was more a thinly veiled, I like flashing my bits too Dutch footballers.

Aye, fucking wankered that day. I  remember drinking on the square

The next thing i know i was sat on my seat in the ground with my mate getting pissed off at me because i kept  asking him what score it was every 2 minutes.

I  also have vague recollections of walking into a restaurant and seeing a load of Bolton fans weeing all over the place whilst folk were eating at their tables.

Happy days.

Madrid was also the worst hangover I can remember having in a long time

next day - sip a bit of water, throw up, move, throw up,breath, throw up, open eyes, throw up

planned on having a nice day in madrid doing some site seeing and that

instead, spent the day like this

Arseholed the night before, stayed in bed until about half 6. Missed all the day, but able to run/dodge batons.

Went back to the hotel and met some lads on a work trip, got offered a job as one of them had worked at the same place as me in istanbul.

Zico, do you still keep in touch with that nice Spanish old man?

nah, he was using me to get to Mr H

I need to go and find that photo :D

Probably my least favourite of the away days in Europe, Madrid I found to be a horrible place - I certainly won't rush back there.

That said, its up against some tough competition because every away day was bloody brilliant

we ran out of ale mid afternoon

sent some bird to the far away shop

she brought back some lagers

mr h must have got a whiff of it and came over

offered him one, as you would, and all was well

we then spotted it was sin alcohol

telling him mid swallow wasn't good

ale everywhere
