Talksport Debate At Minute

Good debate on talksport at the minute, some coaching guy is on the Brazil decrying the lack of technical skills in UK players. Cites that reason as to why the english 18- 23 year old are not playing for their first teams and that there are foreigners in their places, and putting them in a B league will not fix this.

Nail on head.

Yeah our players succeed despite the system I feel

The technically gifted ones were born that way rather than having it coached into them

Fair play to the bloke. Obviously got an eye for an idea.

cant be arsed going into it now, but i do not believe the technical ability is the problem. i think its an excuse that raises its head every couple of years.

there are plenty of technically gifted english players around.

as there are plenty of technically shite foreigners.

there is more to the great game than fucking dancing around a fucking football

I think a lot of our failings are that our kids play outside less than European kids our kids play on poor pitches and therefore lots of postponed games, also our game is based still on strength and kick and rush and our kids don't get forgiven for trying something new they try a turn a skill and lose the ball and they get hammered from parents and fellow players and not enough coaches encourage the bravery to try that bit of skill that might see them lose possession or gift the opposition a goal but also might produce a match winning opportunity, winning matches still is seen to be the be all and end all. Unless we get kids playing on better pitches spending more hours on there skills and encouraging them without fear to try something imaginative we won't see any improvement in our national team.

I don't agree our technically good player when you compare to foreign players are few and far between, that's why British teams get passed of the pitch by the real top sides and virtually zero British players play outside the UK.

I run an under 9s teams and my least effective players are those with the best control and touch, why because there also lightweight and easily pushed off the ball by the lads who are physically advanced I have taken some stick for continually playing the light weight players but I'm convinced that these lads will turn out to be the better footballers in the long run and will continue to stick by them.

Totally correct.

Most kids games you see, you think to yourself 'are 90% of these players even benefiting here?'

The ball flies at them once every 5 minutes, they swing and miss, or slice it, or if they are lucky hoof it aimlessly forwards to shouts of encouragement.

And the 10% of players who are naturally ahead of the rest dominate the game and score all the goals.

They'd be FAR better served up until the age of 10 or 11 or so working on their technique in the time they have to play the game.

Good article int Telegraph over the weekend, St Georges is expected to transform coaching in this country

Kids footy should be played in the summer.

Not saying this will make us World Cup winners. I just don't see any reason why not.

On the coaching like homo says its not that our kids haven't got the technical ability. There's plenty out there. The England line ups for most proper matches is littered with players that are champions league regulars.

There's plenty of kids come through,it's just the way they are dealt with afterwards that's the problem.

Managers in the top flight are under that much pressure they havent got time to blood them in. It's all too easy to draft a load of foreigners in to save their jobs.

IMO there needs to be a quota of homegrown players set for each premiership first team squad. A proper one that will make an impact.

That's the only way kids coming through will get game time.

Kids footy should be played in the summer.

Can't understand why grassroots football is played at the same time as the regular season.

I suppose it means people can play cricket as well but less games would be postponed and leaving early to watch the 12.45 KO wouldn't happen as often.

It also means kids have a summer of training and matches with no school, giving them the bug to spend the summer outside rather than on an Xbox you'd hope.

Could it not just be made that those kids who are really shit at football could then be forced to play cricket or rugby in the summer months, thus keeping them away from the good players and allowing them to develop. They can then carry on with the minority sports, this way, all the sports get the benefit of youth coming through

I like that idea, not sure how it would work though, other than having summer small sided tournaments of the better players from clubs.

Can't imagine parents being happy at their precious not being selected though.

Not enough coaches around like yourself.

In my lads league, all the "best" players are those 6 inches taller than the rest.

In our team, we have 2 belting coaches, both post on here, and our 2 most technically gifted players are absolutly tiny, and good coaches know that.

In a couple of years time, these 2 will be a level above everyone else.

The football pitches are a huge huge problem.

Technical players cant do anything on most of these parks pitches, but watch them on a 3G pitch!!

Thing is, we didn't actually win anything between 1966 and 1991 either, so to just blame the Premiership and foreign players doesn't seem to answer the real questions. Obviously a lot of it hasn't helped, but it can't be the only reason otherwise before the mass influx of foreign players we'd have been doing a lot better than we have. I'm with Wenger on this one, playing with the best makes you better. If the English players are not good enough to get in the team, though. Get better.

It's very, very, very difficult to win a major international competition, not only do you need skill but an awful lot of luck.

Is the real question our mentality? That the players really don't believe they can lift the trophy, coupled with the fact that less kids are actually playing football. In many countries football is the only route out of poverty. I'd be interested to look at the top players in the world and I don't think many of them come from gilded backgrounds, and in many cases rank poverty.

I really believe there is a mentality that we can't win or that the other teams are better. There is no reason for English players to be bad at penalties, they are no poorer than their counterparts across Europe and regularly do it in the domestic league. You can see that they can't handle the pressure. And blaming the media is a myth - is the Italian press less vociferous? A country with daily football only papers? The Spanish? Germany? Not really.

I think it's about a national psyche, and we just don't have a belief that we are ever going to win again. Same way it took a surly Scot to rise to the occasion of winning a tournament that had become a national joke about not winning; and then he got pillored because he was just focused on achieving his goal and not being another Eddie the Eagle Edwards - loved by the people, but fucking shit. We loved those types, not taking themselves serious, not too arrogant but to win, you have to be arrogant, selfish and determined. You have to do what no one else can and believe that you can.

I don't we are raised to do that in this country, tinkering with smaller pitches, a quote of homegrown players, kids playing during summer, 'B' teams (fecking barmy idea that) I believe is fiddling round the edges until we address our mentality. Do this and players will have the confidence to get on the ball. Fans don't help as we love to watch other teams pass it around but as soon as England play is all cries of stop dicking about with it.

it doesn't help that kids aged 11 (think its 11) suddenly get stuck on full size pitches

whats the point

and when moss bank - one of the local superclubs - cant have decent pitch to play on last saturday, it might be time to pack up

At international level I'm certain like Crawley says the mentality is all wrong.

The most positive players on week to week basis, leaders like Steve Gerrard and Frank Lampard that have led their own teams to champions league wins all of a sudden turn into rabbits caught in the headlights.

I sound like a broken record, but I reckon Steve Peters and his team can make some headway in this and make everlasting changes in our overall phsycoligy.

It's all in the head.

Think it's under 13's or even 14's when it goes to full size pitches? Your point still stands though, in a similar vein to the "give it to the big kid" mentality.

The move to summer or at least widespread 3G/4G pitches are both interesting points - rugby league kids games only recently moved to summer and they're finding they might as well suspend the season during the school holidays because of kids being away, so that pretty much defeats the object. Apparently virtually every kids club in Scotland has access to a 3G pitch these days but there's no signs yet of that ending up with dozens of ginger Brazilians.
