  • That prom malarkey, what a load of shit. 15/16 girls dressed like Katie Price and getting wankered. There was nothing wrong with writing on each other's shirts and getting wankered

  • Even with his pretentious American accent?

I can just imagine asking my Dad if I could go to Prom.

'Yes course you can love'

'Brill, I need 400 for the dress and 80 for hair, spray tan, make up and eyelashes'

'I'm not wasting my money on stupid American shite, here's a fiver, get down Nibs'

(Get down before half ten you'll have enough for a Gold Label)

you've enough for a night bite special n'all :D

Aye France do really badly don't they on the Tourism front?

The number of tourists at Royal events suggests otherwise.

Aye, mainly Yanks. And I'm pretty sure of you asked them whether they would like to swap their elected President for a King or Queen who gets there by virtue of birth, they'd turn you down.

Serious question and not in an anti monarchy way but is there a figure for how much money they bring in and what difference it would make if somehow they would be got rid of?

I would say the monarchy brings in more than they take out. And they would bring in a lot more than President Boris Johnson.

Hang on, we have an elected Prime Minister do we not? The queen has fuck all powers anyway, it is just tradition and something that brings money onto this country from abroad.

We have an elected Prime Minister and an unelected head of state. That's not acceptable to me if we are supposedly living in a democracy.

Saying the Royals have no power is way wide of the mark. She has the royal prerogative, she also has the power to to choose the Prime Minister if an election proves too close to call. Aside from that, hold an enormous amount of cultural sway over both elements of the general public and British institutions. In time, I hope we get rid via the ballot box.

Viva la republica! ;-)

Aye, if the Queen didn't live there, there'd be literally fuck all to do in London.

Used to be anti royal, but have changed a lot over time. They are more than self sustainable and most of all I like the fact they bring a feel good factor and a sense of pride to many families in Britain.

Quite happy with an elected head of state - at least I'd get a say

Yes, you'd get a say in electing them and then you'd get fuck all say in anything else they choose to do for the next five years.

When was the last time the monarchy used that power?

Don't forget the stretch limo.

Its a pointless debate, we'll never get rid of them, which is a shame. As I say, we had our chance.

As for COYW argument about electing people and not having a say - why don't you try and follow that viewpoint to its logical conclusion and see where you are?

I'd vote Prince Harry in, he's fucking ace.

Its like he has common roots and just happened to be brought up in the royal family.

I like Zara Phillips as well, she looks a right laugh. And she looks a bit filthy as well

Exactly where we are now. Electing governments that say one thing and do another. Getting rid of the Royal family won't change that.

I agree, but we would all be better off financially though...........or so some people think. Don't they cost us around 50p each per year or something?

When was the last time the monarchy used that power?

That's not really the point - it's also not the question which was asked.  The fact remains - it is still a power which the Monarch holds but has chosen not to exercise.  Each to their own though - if you're happy serving and being a subject of the Queen, good on ya!  I don't see her or any of the rest of them as more important than you or I.  If perhaps we took all her remaining powers and privileges away, stripped back on the money and land we provide her with, I'd be happier to just leave them all in the one palace for the tourists to gawp at.

Like a zoo Kent?

They've already got the bars up going around Buckingham Palace, tourists could be charged a small amount to walk down the Mall and gawp at them.

What's wrong with having something "British" that we can all be proud of, we don't have much to be proud of these days. The hangers on eg, Prince Edward and Andy kids and the rest i don't give a shit about but the immediate royals are something to be treasured

Which is why it's highly unlikely we'll ever get rid of them.  Most people would share your opinion - fair do's.  Stephen Hawking makes me much prouder to be British than any Royal has done.  I actually can't think of anything a Royal has done or said in my lifetime which has actually made me feel pride?  I can think of lots of occasions when it's been the other way around.

And are the Saxe-Coburgs even really that British?

That's not really the point

So why refer to these powers then if they have no real relevance?

Stephen Hawking makes me much prouder to be British than any Royal has done.
