If you go the vatican get a tour or you won't get much from the experience.

Go to the collesium but do a combined tour including the gardens next to em. thats really interesting.

the colloseum has got to be one of the biggest let downs

the pantheon on the other hand...well thats amazing

you can walk the whole trip

Love Rome, be careful of the pick pockets though especially round the Termini station.

Get a street map, find the Spanish Steps and you are very close to the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain and walking distance from colosseum and Forum. I personally didn't get anything from the Vatican but I don't like God or art particularly but I suppose you should see it.

Have a look on booking.com and you can download a bit of a travel guide to Rome with a few places off the beaten track.

Eating/drinking near the main sights can be pretty expensive so use your loaf on that one and shopping for clothes is not cheap either.

Roads are very busy so don't get too pissed.

Consider an open top bus city guide to get your bearings. Rome pisses all over Barcelona as a city break for me - enjoy

Fenny went last year and did most of it by foot iirc, so he's your man.

The man speaks the truth. They are very adept at looting hotel rooms too.

Don't spoil things by fretting about these pickpockets, stick a few of these in your pockets and your missus' handbag, works every time.*

There is an open-top bus tour that you can get on and off where you like - takes you to most of the tourist spots. We walked, and loved it, but were knackered at night - so would do the bus next time

oh aye, itll be fcuking hot and you aint getting in a few of the proper religious bits if you've not got long keks on

the lady will need covered shoulders too

Thanks for the tips everyone, loved it all, such a beautiful city.

Colliseum I found really impressive, just the sheer scale of the thing, same with the Pantheon.

The Vatican didn't quite sit right with me, especially when you have all these beggars outside and over the wall millions upon millions of priceless artefacts. Also bit underwhelmed by the Sistene chapel, after you've walked through rooms and rooms of painted ceilings and walls, it was a bit like is this it? I guess not being religious may play a part.

Eating wasn't as bad as I thought either, had a bottle of Prosecco or wine every night and most expensive meal we had was little over 50€

Would definitely recommend it anyway, so much to see and do. The saying there's something around every corner is quite apt.

Edit: oh and the Trevi's bone dry and covered in scaffolding much to the other half's disgust. Same with the fountain at the bottom of the Spanish Steps

I felt the same when I went - it just left me cold.

Someone took offence on here to it though!

Any tips where to stay in Rome?

Went in 97 for the football....so this one may be slightly less stressful and I'm also not planning on getting frozen bottles of water thrown at me, chased by a transvestite with a metal bar outside termini staion or a gun pointed in my face by a aggresive police officer...

Really? So there's folk out there ok with all that money sat there doing nowt but yet Christian aid say they need money.

I'm turning into a heartless atheist I know :)

If you're anti-religion, surely it's better when they don't 'walk the walk'? Let's face it, if they went around being do-gooders and selfless all the time, they'd be more unimpeachable - it'd be like the 'Ice Bucket Challenge' thing.

Not really.

maybe they should just have the beggars chucked in jail

Are you sure?

Not even the tranny? :D

Bobcat, I'm stopping in the Tridente Suites when I go at the end of Oct - never stayed in them before but I've been a couple of times to Rome and know the area is a good location to be in.

spagna is good

last time we stayed near barberini - even better location imo

navona/pantheon this time - only downside being lack of metro but ive got legs

id only rule out vatican and termini tbh

biggish - i have a new official best location in rome

via della scrofa..halfway between navona and the pantheon - 5 minutes from both

while on the pantheon, got to go here

http://www.tazzadorocoffeeshop.com/

quid 50 for a good sized capuccino, add some bread and you've got breakfast sorted for 3 quid

10 minutes to the river, another 10 minutes to st peters

15 minutes or so to the very forlorn looking trevi

we had one of the floors in this place - about 100 quid per night and you get the private kitchen too

http://www.booking.c...highlight_room=

this was our third visit and maybe we should go somewhere new, but the more you go, the more you see

peroni watch - 6 or 7 euros in a bar, 60 cents from the supermarket

oh and if anybody wants the guys details to avoid site charges, send us apm

decent location but not the best - like i said earlier, theres onlya copuple of places i wouldnt stay

i'd not stop near the vatican, its dead at night or near termini - just cos its mainline railway station - think kings cross

but looks too expensive for me
