Right, I'm flummoxed and so i put it to the greater good of WW to make a life changing decision for me.

 

I've been offered a new job back in London.

 

Bigger remit, step on wards to hopefully setting up a consultancy one day etc etc etc

 

Pay rise but not huge (just shy of covering the commuter costs)

 

but it's back in London and means I can move closer to my kids rather than the two hours in takes me now, possibly down to twenty minutes and a bigger house for what we have now.

 

So money wise it might be tight BUT I'd be closer to the kids, it's a better job and a family home.

 

Do I take it, or possibly keep on looking in the hope of a better pay option (I've pushed them as far as they can go on the money)

 

they've also said I can have total flexibility on the days I have the kids so i don't have to be in London before pick up. Plus if it's twenty minutes I might even be able to have them on certain weekdays (they've also said i can work some days at home if I have the girls)

 

Hmmmmm. Its just that blasted money. If I held out for a position back in the commercial sector then i could get more money but as it's funded (thank you all you tax payers) they can't break the pay scale. But in the commercial sector I certainly wouldn't get that sort of flexibility.

 

Throw into the mix that I hate Cambridge, but I don't want to just leap at the first thing that comes along (even though it is a good option) and it's with my current employers partner organisations (see competitors) and it'd go down like a sick sandwich with the team and more importantly the board (the head of the board who headhunted and created this role for me and is a good friend, works for the major competitor for this new place's business and everyone knows everyone else in this business)

 

And because today I'm an indecisive sod, the other half is on an away day, instead of tossing a coin it might as well be as arbitrary as asking a bunch of strangers. 

 

Oh, and has anyone ever lived in Ashford?

Sounds like everything except the money is better with the new position - give it a whirl, make things happen and surely the money will follow?

Take it. Nearer the kids, more time spent with them, very little impact on money it sounds like.

 

The only thin stopping you is loyalty to your current employer. Not sure on your industry whether that's a deal breaker. Probably shouldn't be!

I haven't lived in Ashford but I was there yesterday. There's not a right lot going on apart from a designer shopping village. Neighbourting Folkestone and Dover also terrible.

 

I would move to Canterbury and commute in if it was me.

Career consequences are not I'd just have to keep looking for something. Its a good option and I'd be part of a new directorate for a national organisation, so it's a pretty big deal on that level.

 

I would hope that the money would follow, plus I'd be able in 3 or 4 years to perhaps go for something else without the hassle of moving again as I'd be still in London (4 times in the last two years, I'd really quite like to settle somewhere now)

 

But it's the 5k commuting costs that are making me wince.

I've lived in Faversham. Never again. Its just a bit too small for me, which is why I was thinking Ashford.

If it's the cost of the commute that puts you off, offer to go halves with them. Honest. London employers are becoming more open to the idea of helping out with travel costs as the commuter belt is expanding and expanding, hence more expensive and inconvenient to get to work. A friend of a friend works Mon and Thu in London and the rest of the week at her home in York. All paid for on the train which takes an hour and half each way. Public sector too.

 

As you are a communist, would this promotion mean you achieve the dream of paying top rate tax? To stay true to your beliefs you should take the course which means you will pay the most tax.

I don't think it is.

 

I've never met him, but he doesn't across as that kind of person.

If anything, he'd be more likely to underplay it and I see him asking as a sign of a genuine dilemma.

 

He wants to see more of his kids, but doesn't want to struggle financially especially as interest rate hikes are on the way.
