January 30, 201511 yr What a fantastic send off Mr Churchill got, and well deserved too. On Tuesday it was the 29th anniversary of Space Shuttle Challenger exploding, killing all 7 astronauts, that shocked me too.

We have more in England, I am sure of it. He just hasn't had reason to step out of the shadows yet but I feel sure that the time is coming - possibly sooner than many think.

He was the right man at the right time - but by all accounts hugely disfunctional in day to day life and with little understanding of the lives of people outside of his social class. He was also a fully paid up union member and at one point, members of his family were concerned that he was going to convert to Islam. Fascinating character - very much doubt we'll ever see his like again.

He did have an issue with an insistence on strategies based upon landings in the peloponnese, but other than that its a thumbs up from me.

January 30, 201511 yr They played one of his classic wartime speeches on that Paxman documentary: "What kind of people do they think we are? Is it possible they do not realize that we shall never cease to persevere against them until they have been taught a lesson which they and the world will never forget?" Can you imagine any of today's career politicians coming up with anything as good as that?
January 30, 201511 yr He was a brilliant wartime PM, some say his stubbornness prolonged the war but others suggest that whilst he was undoubtedly stubborn and had major character flaws, no one else could have fortified the British (and Empire) spirit in the same way. No one can know for sure but I like to go with the latter.

January 31, 201511 yr Crossed the floor more times than a queen at GAY. But, what a war time leader. At least we had the sense to vote in Labour post war. Whatever your political persuasion the post war reform and universal care for all where the perfect rebuilding platform after the war. But Churchill had significant international insight. He knew that Russia was the next threat to democracy, no peace time prime minister but we all have to respect his work and leadership. Not in a little Englander way, but as what he was a skilled international politician.
