  • So they have £700 left to piss up the wall then.     As already said, food banks are by and large abused by those who don't really need them putting even further strain on those who actually need

Would it help if folk living in council houses with empty bedrooms moved into smaller properties? Has anyone thought of that?

I can't be arsed starting a new thread and this one is linked-ish. RMT. I wonder how much of the general public are behind them?

I'm going say a big fuck right off.

The deal their members rejected looked pretty good on the face of it.....

All the signal boxes are manned by the RMT so fuck all will move when they do strike, which I would guess will be around the next bank holiday to piss off as many people as possible.

You don't mess with the likes of Jimmy Kapp - he'll get the best deal for the workers by hook or by crook.

Doing it on a working day would be much more effective; that couldn't be tolerated for long.

There's hardly any trains from Bolton at present, so we aren't disadvantaged!

good point - do the replacement buses go on strike too?

Now there's something I've never pondered until today.

No. You just have to set off a week early!

I made the mistake a while ago of using the replacement from Bolton to Htown. Never again, I could've walked it faster even with my fliddy legs. Mum un Manchester this Friday evening and will be getting off at Bolton and Joe Baxing it back to the burbs.

Are there any trains from Mcr to Bolton?

They can barely keep a decent service running (yes I know they don't operate the trains) yet turn down a £500 across the board one off lump sum and a guarantee of wages linked to inflation for 2 years. Madness.

From a slightly different point of view a good example of why privatisation is not the, across the board golden arrow some seem to think it is.

According to the train line, yes.

Royal Mail now take an average of two days to deliver a 1st Class letter or parcel, unless you pay the £5 'next day guaranteed' premium.

Oh aye, they now employ thieving bastards, too...

But, they've got a 'responsibility to their shareholders', the golden get-out clause for all deterioration of privatised shitbag services.

Edited by Youri McAnespie

Why should the taxpayer help subsidize the mail service, you ask? True, but why should they take the shitty end of the stick when it's sold off?

(all further comments on this matter are now closed :) ).

Whistl.. First major casualty of the new government?

Boo..

I see they have started processing new bills already..

According to the train line, yes.

I'd heard they were all by bus, so that's not too bad

It is nothing to do with privatisation but everything to do with too much regulation and a highly unionised workforce which ought to be enough to make private investors run a mile.  And lots of old problems to do with the way the lines were built in the 19th century. Shan't bore you with that here.  Not that I'm old enough to remember but I doubt anyone is nostalgic for British Rail except perhaps football specials.  We'd have been better off if the Germans had destroyed the lines like they did France's rather than just damaged them. But we're stuck because anyone who thinks building new lines altogether is cost effective might as well be on Mars.

Bus transport is subject to much less regulation. You can get from London to Aberdeen for less than a tenner. Every eight weeks or so I pay £12 to get from Barnstaple to Heathrow and vice versa on National Express.  In three weeks' time I fly from Stansted to Warsaw for £18.  Low regulation, no unions. There's the difference.

Since privatising the railways, fares have gone up relative to inflation as has the cost to the taxpayer.

All round it is a disastrous tale and a salient lesson for anyone who thinks the market is supreme.

Another half fact. The fares have gone up because the subsidy per journey has come down massively.

Privatisation has been such a failure that rail usage has doubled.

EDIT - not even a half fact. Adjusted for inflation, this year's subsidy will be comfortably lower than 1994 in absolute terms, let alone adjusted for the massive rise in usage.

If you're not doing anything on the 23rd May, there's an anti austerity march in Manchester.

Bring your own kaftan and joss sticks. Deodorant not necessary.

I hear theyll be handing out free mung bean salad to all protestors.

That's you going down on the list of 'extremists'.

More people taking trains has absolutely nothing to do with how they are operated and you know it.

A while ago I read a comprehensive analysis that showed publically owned trains, networks and stations offered better value than the privatised subsidised lines did. Will try and find it. I am certain also that customer satisfaction is lower.

Certain things work when privatised but only when there can be genuine competition.

Richard Bransons trains are ace.

That fucking rattler that leaves bolton for Manchester isn't fit for pigs.
