That's horrific.  I also remember hearing about a stray cat that was adopted by workers at a furnace, then wandered in to an oven.  Poor thing, awful way to die.

 

Also in the last few years, there was that cleaner that was decapitated while cleaning out a mincing machine.

I remember something similar a few year back; some fault with an industrial oven, and an internal conveyer belt. Rather than wait for an engineer, the bosses switched the oven off for half an hour and sent some poor sod inside. He was selected due to his experience of potholing. They switched the belt on for him to carry out whatever minor repair was required, not realising the internal temperatures were still in the high hundreds. The belt only went one way, and his co-workers had to listen to his agonised screams as he slowly burned to death.

 

Industrial ovens; fuck that

My grandad burned to death after his overalls caught in a welding factory.

 

Bloke he was working with turned up for a night shift pissed, passed out and slept through the whole thing.

Couple of lads from the rossendale valley were dragged into a a machine a few years ago.

 

One tried to save the other and both lost their lives.

 

Knew one of them, nice lad.

my 32 years in manufacturing involved vulcanising rubber products at temps between 135 and 210C. Even in the 70's there were strict safeguards in place for oven entry and isolation and as for the moving parts in the oven or rubber mixers (basically 180 litre dough mixers) any one who went in had one of the two castel isolation keys in their pockets. The other was in the office ( both have to be in the control panel for the power to be live to the equipment).

 

So in my view its corporate manslaughter given the strict H&S rules that have been around for years.

 

ps i remember the rossendale case, the MD and another Director were in fact jailed for corporate manslaughter.

That oven death was one of the many examples they used on an IOSH course I was on.

Even in the 70's there were strict safeguards in place for oven entry and isolation and as for the moving parts in the oven or rubber mixers (basically 180 litre dough mixers) any one who went in had one of the two castel isolation keys in their pockets. Both my brothers work in vulcanising, mainly repairing conveyor belts. Over here they say everything is now very strict and as safe as possible but they work all over the world and encounter some pretty dodgy practices. Fuck that.

My first visit to a rubber carpet underlay manufacturer in Malaysia in 1997 was an eye opener. I saw unguarded two roll mills and numerous workers with stumps for hands. I saw cigarette foil being used in place of fuse breakers. But at least they had a a prayer room, no eating facilities but a good fucking tidy prayer room! 9 years later i went to China and their rubber mix conveying systems consisted of 20 blokes with heat resistant gloves ( full of holes) and wheel barrows!

 

ps on these visits  i was weighing up whether to buy these outfits. Needless to say I made my excuses and left.

A russian bloke one of my brothers was working with in Siberia catched a lift on a conveyor back up to the top. When they got to the top all they saw was a load of blood, he got caught at the end and it ripped his legs clean off. They got him to the medical centre (canteen) and managed to save his life, fuck knows how and I am not sure a life of disability over there is much fun either.

I was always a Farrel/Banbury man. A guy in the early 70's got minced in one at Chloride Lorival in the village when my mum was working there.

 

yep i think u are correct. not sure if it was floor level feeding or waist height and he got tangled in what he was feeding. 

 

yep quicker than a bullet through the heart dependant on rpm.

In 1999 i was mooching around our Chicago plant twiddling my thumbs on a hot 100F day prior to my flight back that tea time when i came across to steps leading up to a rooftop gantry housing that had an elephants graveyard of old mixers  from the 40's 50's and 60's when the place was an old general rubber factory. No one had been though that door for decades. I just sat there of couple  of hours trying to imagine the hustle and bustle of times long gone. There was plenty of 50's graffiti to admire too!

3 men are needed to operate a big hydraulic hammer, the main man was the son he moves the metal around, the father was the hammer driver, in a nutshell, the dad hit the metal, it shot out, bearing in mind it would be around a 1000 degrees, hit his son in the chest and shot him 20 metres across the factory, killed instantly.

Poor bloke.
