The Railway Pub Bromley Cross

Shutting down due to losing business from the work on Farnworth Tunnel closing Bromley Cross Station.

The Railway Venue, in Chapeltown Road, Bromley Cross, is preparing to close its doors for the final time in January.

"The business has been built up on people coming in from all over the place with many from Yorkshire, Clitheroe and Blackburn, who got the train straight to our front door.

"The trains haven't been running properly since May. We used to depend on the weekend to see us through but this has absolutely killed us and we don’t know what to do."

You lose loads of drinkers if you start charging on some saturday nights.

Either have it as a pub or a paid music venue, trying to do both doesnt work

works for henigans on bury road

granted they have two rooms

ive never been in the railway so maybe they couldnt operate like that

The Volunteer is now a Sainsbury's!

Really? - that's a disgrace, was one of my first regular drinking haunts

Is The Spread down in Eagley still going?

Isn't that a bit like saying pound shops will save town centres?

More like the opposite imo.

No although that can be argued. Imo what gets pubs to work is people going and buying beer. If you can knock a pint out at £1.50 in Bolton tc you are getting people in regularly. Everyone I read about is doing brilliantly well, the concept is fantastic and will make the guy who created them very wealthy.

The other argument is that most people I know shop in pound shops, there is no stigma to them anymore and they are here to stay.

If they get one in Bolton id go.

yep did our end of season jolly down there last year. Good pub.

The pubs in Horwich do well mainly because they have had some money spent on them. The pub that hasnt had owt spent on it is the one thats suffering.

The crown is very busy and its not cheap. Decent beer in decent surroundings and your onto a winner

Spread stil going. Changed hands a while ago. Used to be owned by a guy I knew who was a big Whites fan. Used to be very ITK in Allardyces day as all new signings initially moved into Eagley Mill appts and used to go in his pub.

Surprising that Dunscsr Arms seems to be quietly carrying on going in face of competition from Flag, Sportsmans, Chethams and Egerton pubs too.

used to go in there the odd saturday when they did the roasts

The Dunscar arms is closed or was last week when I drove past. Had a advertisement on the front to let it out as a restaurant.

Chetham is the Brewhouse now owned by Dunscar Bridge. Nice enough, decent beer, overpriced pub grub. Nice place to start out. Seems to do a decent trade after work, early evenings.

Ate at the Rivington Bar and Grill at the weekend, that place nearly shut for good after the closure of Crown Lane choked off most of their trade.

We go regularly, and went a few times whilst the bridge was closed. Always seemed busy enough

Aye I pop in the brewhouse in the off season on Friday night's. Always busy. Then off to the briers which amazes me even more for being busy.

Really? It's always dead when I go in (Brierfield). Then again I rarely venture further than the tap.

Yeah it resembles a school disco but always busy on a Friday

that will definitely attract a truly special kind of wanker :)

I was there for a function a few weeks back :D

My grandad was landlord of The Volunteer in the 1970's.

Apparently the problem was the calibre of punter. It was just folk wandering in clutching Group On vouchers, ordering from the saver menu and drinking tap water.

My grandad also ran...

The Recreation Tavern

The New Market Tavern opposit Bolton Palais

Dickson Green Labour Club in Farnworth

Blightys Nightclub

Bolton Casino

Burnely Casino

And finished off at the aformentioned Volunteer in Darcy Lever.

Haha my knowledge of Bolton consists of how to get to the balmoral from the station and where to get a cab to Vulcan. :)

I'm not much better. I do know I'm barred from the vol you mention though for going in post match leathered after having a lamb kebab in town, drinking baileys and then throwing all the meaty chunks up in the urinal whilst having a piss.

I made a quick exit just as the auto flush came on!

I think it goes back further than that. The Gonzo family coat of arms has crossed sausages on it.
