Heroes is one of my most favouritist songs.

 

Not someone I spent a huge amount of time listening to but can't deny his influence and supreme talent.

 

Have had a listen to his new album tonight and - fuck me - what a way to Bow out, so to speak. Nkt a dry eye in the house.

Never a massive fan. 10% of his stuff was brilliant but 90% was garbage

 

That said I'd put him in the same bracket as Elvis, The Beatles, etc for the influence on music

Spot on. People moaning about the outpouring of grief over his death are missing something. I can sort of understand people who didn't get why Lemmy was so celebrated, but this is fucking Bowie we're talking about. It was almost surreal this morning when I turned the radio on in the car and they were talking about him in the past tense. The fact his final album was released on Friday and, in hindsight, it's all about him dying - literally saying goodbye - says it all. As influential as Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Freddie Mercury, Johnny Cash. The end of an era. You don't have to idolise these people to understand what a massive impact they had on our culture in general.

 

Having said that - I'm not on facebook, but it says a lot that people who ARE on facebook seem to be the ones tutting about the reaction to his death.

For a bit of perspective, maybe think about how you felt when Sir Nat died compared to how non-Bolton/football fans felt. Or someone else you idolised, yet never met. Going by your logic here, you shouldn't have felt anything other than "So what? Happens to us all". It's like someone who doesn't like football saying "He was only a footballer FFS, why build a statue?".

 

Also, Bowie was anything but a "Pop Star". Pop Stars go with what's "popular" and stick with it until the trend has passed, then they usually disappear. Bowie pioneered. The music he made only became 'pop' because he had made it popular, then he'd change his style completely and move onto something else. Sometimes it failed, but he didn't give a fuck.
