How terribly sad. And scary.

I know full well all 3 interviews "googled" me..one asked me how old my Daugher was.. (which I made no mention of in my application).

Bit wrong really..

Any mention of your enjoyment of canine fornication ?

I'm saying it's due diligence, don't be a prick and you've got nothing to worry about. In this age you'd be naive to expect not being googled! Saves you employing a racist nonce. Bollocks to employing someone who interviews well, and nothing else.

Genuine question then

What do you do if you google someone who has applied and you cannot find anything out about them. Zero

Myself for example all you would find is something relating to a football team I used to play for years and years ago. Nowt else.

Clients of mine have tried out of curiosity but found nothing and it made me more determined than ever to keep it that way as it frustrated them immensely.

Would it put you off employing somebody?

I know what you're saying, but that's the job of the interviewer, to ask the right questions to assess a candidates suitability. If the candidate is a bit of a nob then a good panel will get a feel for this.

As for a racist/nonce you'd have difficulty if someone was smart enough. Just have to say all the right phrases.

Ultimately, the interviewer still has to make an assessment. Dehumanising the process is a sad sign of the times.

Interviews are done by people who have actual other jobs, typically. That's the only way you can assess someone's suitability. I don't see it as sad that it's easier to identify a fraud, a bullshit CV, these days. It's only the same as a reference in reality, an online reference.

I get that, really. If you got a few good, "clean" candidates in you'd still have to separate them. That's where good people skills come in. BSA has that in spades for example. Megson didn't.

I remember my first job after uni- interview with the MD, a cracking fella who'd been around the block a bit. We got on famously, I relaxed and he got to see more of the real me. We talked about all sorts, but no doubt all the while he was making judgements.

Just a bit worrying, if it all goes down the route of social media investigations etc.

Like I said, these days they (IBM in this case) are looking for people who understand social media. So it's a given that if you are a prick on social media then you don't "get it". QED.

This doesn't bode well for Clayton Powis

I'm similar. Very little to find. I'd suggest we are in a very small minority though. A bloke who used to post on here has canned potential candidates because of their social media ramblings

In that case its a given. Fair enough.

I find the whole twitter/Facebook thing weird. OK for distant acquaintances etc, but the general spilling of meaningless drivel is perverse.

Never bought into it and never will. Must be some sad fucks out there who think folk need to know you're passing through some particular airport or what colour underwear you have on today.

The phrase 'get a fucking life' was never more appropriate.

If there's an added privacy issue where these mega companies can profile you for all sorts of reasons then it is definitely wise to avoid.

I'd say that's got to be a good thing, it certainly wouldn't put me off

if you've got a good cv and experience, got a reference and able to interview well and prove you are capable, then there shouldn't be anything they'd look for on social / google to see if you were even better (but if there is, all the better)

I'd say they'd be checking to make sure you weren't full of shit or acting like a prick on your social media in some undesirable way, or been in the news for doing bad things - it's more a personality check more than anything, not a skills/experience check
