The English Flag

https://www.facebook.com/BritishDynamite/videos/663798310659042/

Hope that link works.

Anyways - the St George's Cross:  A symbol of colonialism, imperialism, crusade and far right oppression . . . or just a flag that a lot of folk take pride in?

A flags a flag to me but listening to the two arguments the fella at the front is the one who has old-fashioned views and clings to the past, with a little prejudice thrown in for good measure.  Lad with the flag is quite articulate and makes a good case.

It's a shame that some folk can't identify with a flag (whatever that means) or see it in such a negative light but minorities should never be ruling majorities in a democracy.

Or Carlsberg, al la the Swan.

The 'anti' flag chap. By his definition then, being proud to be English....is also offensive.

I'm getting that vibe, aye.

Rather muddled thinking imo.

id not say its offensive

but i find peoples reasons for being proud a little strange, sometimes

The team has been doing us proud but there's been a distinct lack of patio furniture chucking and lads doing that little dance where you jig about and stick index fingers alternately into the air (preferably done nonchalantly in the path of a water-cannon) - shoddy IMO. Nowt to be proud of there.

Both people in that video were thick as mince. Wish I'd not wasted 3 minutes watching that garbage.

The England flag is not a symbol of racism, but has most definitely been adopted by certain groups in an attempt to associate it with nationalism, xenophobia and racism.

The answer is to re-brand it to move it away from these sorts of organisations. I don't mean re-design, just to do some work to associate it with positive things.

for balance, i also find this strange

Wonder how many times he's told Germans to change their flag.

Romans were a right set of cunts therefore no Italian should fly theirs.

What went on hundreds of years ago has nowt to do with Britain or England now. It's history that we've learned from.

Shit stirring cuntybollocks just wants to be offended.

But we know that some people now, use it as a symbol for those things. Lets not pretend they don't.

If I was a Muslim and I was walking down the road past a load of flag wearing blokes chanting, I can imagine it might be off putting.

Saying that it would be the same walking down the road past a load of flag wearing Scottish men.

However, the English flag has definitely been appropriated by nationalistic organisations in a more overt way. That guy was totally thick and couldn't articulate it, but then the other guy couldn't put a stronger argument together either.

So what?

As stated in the video, it's no more their flag than mine.

I repeat, has he complained about the German flag etc?

He's simply a twatstick wanting his bit of fame.

fancy walking through daubhill as a whitey with 1000 pakistani flags being waved after they play england in the final of the cricket WC

me neither

its not the flag, its who is waving it

If they were Scottish then they'd invariably be kayleyed, so why be intimidated? A wee push to one of them and they'd all topple over like a set of drunken dominoes...

You are making stuff up. The numbers flying it positively way outweigh the ignorants.

From what I understand; a lot of Bolton's Asians are of Bangladeshi or Indian origin, (though this could be bollocks) so might be different flags flying.

It's the world cup next year, perhaps we'll be able to judget better then.

Anyway, I agree with what you said, if a right wing skin head chanting shit wants to wear the English flag then there's not much I can do, other than refuse to let his ilk take it away from me.

That's my thoughts as well.

The best way to do that is for all English folk, regardless of origin, to proudly fly it.

A George's Cross flying over a little country village somewhere in the shires is a beautiful thing - no-ones telling me otherwise.

Minorities could also fly the flag but generally choose a Pakistani, Indian, Jamaican or whatever flag instead.  Their choice but . . .

It doesn't quite have that same poetic loveliness when it's stuck on a flagpole alongside a Rangers flag in a back yard in Halliwell mind.

Aye. Quite nice to see increasing numbers hanging out of windows.

Last world cup, there was a street up Lostock way, on "the Birches" estate. Every house was festooned with a flag from one of the participating nations and buntings hanging from lamp posts.

It was colourful and great to see.

"the challenge is not to turn round"

Quite!  But as said above, it depends on who is flying it and their intent.

Any argument I've heard for replacing it has not been convincing.

Read a Voice article years ago that wanted the UJ changed to reflect more diversity - as it was claimed that it represents slavery and oppression to many.

The answer:  A UJ that was basically a new styled Jamaican flag - ha ha!  that's diversity for you!

A lot of the negative things people are now attaching to the St George’s flag were attached to the Union Jack prior to the 90’s.

Does anyone actually put a flag in their windows/car? Anyone without kids of a certain age that is? Can't imagine doing that tbh. Not because of any connotations with the flag, but mainly because it seems a bit pointless and childlike....

Aye but think the article must have been early to mid 00s.

The whole idea of replacing a flag and the inferred symbolism is, to me, very similar to the idea of removing statues of historical figures.

It's attempting to silence or rewrite history - much better to keep and reeducate so that it can be understood more widely (good and bad) and perhaps embraced in a more holistic way moving forwards.

far right loons would just choose another symbol like say a cricket bat crossed with a beer mat or some such nonsense - we'd end up having to ban cricket bats instead . . .  was that partridge enough for you? ;)

What a surprise. Or are you embarassed to do so?

Course not. Never seen on a far right march over there.
