Anyways - the St George's Cross:  A symbol of colonialism, imperialism, crusade and far right oppression . . . or just a flag that a lot of folk take pride in?

 

A flags a flag to me but listening to the two arguments the fella at the front is the one who has old-fashioned views and clings to the past, with a little prejudice thrown in for good measure.  Lad with the flag is quite articulate and makes a good case.

 

It's a shame that some folk can't identify with a flag (whatever that means) or see it in such a negative light but minorities should never be ruling majorities in a democracy.

Wasn't the Euros in Germany the first time most of the population had flown their flag for decades because of its association with the German far right?

The whole idea of replacing a flag and the inferred symbolism is, to me, very similar to the idea of removing statues of historical figures.

 

It's attempting to silence or rewrite history - much better to keep and reeducate so that it can be understood more widely (good and bad) and perhaps embraced in a more holistic way moving forwards.

Generally yes. There are instances where you have to change. For example the German flag post 1945...

 

But replacing the English flag is ridiculous and only adds to the fuel the nationalist groups want to set fire to.

The Irish tricolour is a nice sight on St Paddy's day. I'd be a bit nervous walking down the Falls road though, through a parade of folk flying them.

And embarrassed? I mean yes. But only because putting a flag in your window during a world cup, that your neighbours who you see every day, pretty much are the only ones who will see, seems utterly pointless.

 

Would I carry a flag at the world cup? Yep. Putting them up at home strikes me as the act of a simpleton. Sorry.

Quite. Many thousands of us simpletons flying flags at the moment.

If I'd packed in work at my peak time and spent shit loads to go to the world cup I'd be exonerated.

You say that, and granted it's not exactly a national outcry; but I'd say that mon on the video represents a fair chunk of how many from ethnic minorities feel about it.

 

I'm more interested in the arguments that folk put forward for such things - in this case a clear historical prejudice against all things English.

 

If it were to be changed I'd have it as it is but in each of the four corners I'd have one of; curry, cannabis - rasta hat, Polish sausage and a pint.

 

I haven't thought it through - that would offend the vegans/vegtarians

Don't have to meet folk to know how they think or feel do you?  But aye, I've met a fair few of them n all.  

 

In hindsight I should have asked them if they saw the Palestinian flag as a symbol of a murderous, terrorist regime?

I’ve been lucky enough to be in various countries during the World Cup, European Championships or other major sporting events and it’s the same in every country. Flags flying in support of their national team. It’s normal patriotism. This crops up on here every major tournament.

I’m one of the few on here who witnessed our only World Cup win. If we repeat that, believe me, you ain’t seen nothing yet!

As much as it sucks that the wife's mental health has stopped her doing what she enjoys I don't miss the opinions of some of her acquaintances.

On my street ( 4 bed detached double garages ) the first house to display the flag across the front of their property were my next door neighbors.

A family of Indian heritage ,Sunday afternoon i could hear the footie mad son shouting  "come on dad lets do the Lingard goal again"

There is no way these people associate the flag with oppression or imperialism , just a love of football

Not sure what about it wouldn't be allowed at other schools, as long as the kids in the video aren't subject to safeguarding.
