Guest Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 absolutely no chance do you change anything about the formation, Stones or Maguire can push in alongside Henderson to give an extra man in midfield 2 changes in personnel, Rose for Young. the chance Rose had in extra time shows why a left footed LB is needed. Young hasnt got in behind an opponents RB in 3 games so far and his delivery has been average at best Rashford in for Sterling. calls for Sterling to be dropped after Tunisia were very premature. He deserved a 2nd chance. Hes now had 3. Nothing is happening for him, nothing is working for him and his touch reminds me of a dog trying to catch a tennis ball with its mouth across a field. just hits him and fucks off further away from him Sweden will sit quite deep so Sterling running in to the channels wont be a huge asset. Rashford can drop off like he did against Costa Rica Semi's here we come After Kane, Sterling was our best player. His movement and running with the ball were great. Lingard/Alli are the ones for me who have to step up. Both went missing for chunks of the game and Lingard had chances on the break but his end product was poor.
madthatter Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 I was on a plane when we beat Germany 5-1 The yank pilot announced the score when we landed but just assumed he got it wrong Was about 4 days later I saw it on SSN in some sports bar So was I as it happens - also discovered we were top of the Prem after beating Liverpool on the flight. Guy next to me must have wondered what i was doing stifling a whole body shake and incoherent mumbling . . .
jimmyjoojar Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 I'd go with what Big Sam said on the radio this morning. 4 at the back, Rashford, Kane and Sterling as a front 3. Henderson, LC, Lingard/Alli in midfield. We aren't creating chances and so far Sweden will be the best defensive team we've played. The 3 at the back will be marking 1 main striker and getting pulled out wide (as happened second half yesterday). Pretending that the system worked is silly. It didn't. It worked for 45 minutes but we didn't create clear chances. When Colombia got any pressure on us the wingbacks become a 5 and we had gaps in midfield. Its not gonna happen and for good reason. Just because BSA suggested it doesn't make it anymore valid.
madthatter Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 Yep. Change the system. Don't need 3 at the back, get an extra attacking player in there and beef up the midfield. The way we played didn't really work last night in terms of creating chances and the wing backs were knackered towards the end. That would be suicide imo. Rose and Rashford in Sterling Young out. Simples. This WC is showing that these teams are hard to beat and Iceland wasn't as big an embarrassment as it might have first seemed (still shite though) Got to say Kane ran his bollocks off last, night proper captain's performance. Shame he dropped so deep
Guest Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 Its not gonna happen and for good reason. Just because BSA suggested it doesn't make it anymore valid. Not saying it does. I felt last night we should have gone to a 4. There isn't really any logic in 3 at the back against Sweden. The game is in Samara its hot. Which means wing backs will have to be more careful about the runs they make. Which means we'll have less natural width. Less supply for Kane. We aren't playing through the middle against an organised Sweden. System should be changed. The best teams show flexibility when required and I'm hoping Southgate will do so. Be very English to keep this system and stick to it like glue. The whole point is you have to change it when necessary. IF we end up playing Croatia or even Brazil there is no chance we're going to play Henderson on his own, so a change of some sort will be made then for sure.
L/H White Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 just me that think Ali isnt at all fit? looked well off the pace last night i'd replace ali with RLC and Rose for Young dont want to change the team to much so would stick with sterling rashford much better from the bench

We're not creating chances as things stand and Sweden will know exactly what they have to do against us to stop us.

bolton va va Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 Even after accepting that Sweden will be hard to break down, i would stick with the system that has got us so far & only make changes later on if it isn't working. I don't like Sterling & think that he's been hopeless on the ball but his runs & movement have been a big part of the "system ", while Rashford is a poor man's Ameobi, who'll score a spectacular goal every 10 games & spend the other 9 games trying & failing to repeat it. So i'd stick with Sterling & will probably spend most of the match swearing at him !!!....with Rashford as a sub if it's not working.
gonzo Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 There’s not a chance we will change the system that’s got us to where we are. The system will have been drilled in to them for weeks on end. No way he’ll start dicking about trying new stuff. It’s up to them to stop us imo. It will be the same team that started last night. A lot calling for young to be swapped with rose, but I think I’m in a minority of liking young. He keeps the balls well and gives everyone a chance to compose themselves. Bit like diouff used to do. Keep the ball for a bit. Ali is the major mystery for me. I’ve honestly not seen enough of him at spurs to comment but for England he’s either unfit or hiding. The balls a hot potato and never shows.

However, Sterling isnt having a 1 in 10 at the minute.. and yes he might be making decent runs but apart from the first 10 minutes v Tunisia those runs have hardly led to a glut of chances? A number 10 who is so critical to how we play needs to be doing more at the moment Edited July 4, 2018 by barrycowdrill
Site Supporter Spider Posted July 4, 2018 Site Supporter Posted July 4, 2018 We're carrying Alli, but I doubt he'll drop him now. It'll be the same team barring injuries. What we have to do is credit a certain Pep Guardiola with the composure that emanates from Stones and Walker. Time was, an England defender would hoof it upfield almost every time he was under the slightest pressure. Our defenders generally find a pass into a very supportive midfield. We still like a bit of bite up front but with Kane sniffing there's always a chance. It's coming home. Or to France.
Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted July 4, 2018 Site Supporter Posted July 4, 2018 Ali doesn't seem fully fit. Seems to be playing within himself. As for sterling running well with the ball. Well Roger me with a prize winning marrow- he has good intentions and tries but just loses it. And given that most of the time it seems to bounce away off him in a Kevin Davies esque garage door style then he's a threat and a nuisance but doesn't deliver. He is important in his movement and showing for the ball but for me there's too little end product. Anyway, not going to go down the slagging off root; whoever plays gets full backing.
Elson Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 Guess who's plane takes off at 15.25 on Saturday. please please a 2 hour delay, was wondering if the pilot would keep us updated.

There is too little end product from every English attacking player apart from Kane if truth be told. Alli/Lingard the wing backs aren't creating chances. Sterling would benefit from being wide right in a 3 in my view. I thought he did well last night but he's not really a natural striker. Probably reflects where we are that Trippier who is playing well, is having to take our freekicks outside the box. I mean he's got a good right foot, but isn't at the level of set pieces that most teams have at this stage.

Absolutely love Stones in that role. what a footballer. The amount of times he stands there and directs where players should be to give them the ball and we have seen time & time again CB's panicking when someone is closing them down. He just stands still, waits for them to commit and goes the other way. id be panicking a bit if he & Maguire were in a back 2 together but that back 3 is perfect for him. for them all actually Edited July 4, 2018 by barrycowdrill

I was saying the same after the Tunisa game, never seen Alli have a decent game for England. Another player who seems a shadow of himself in the England shirt. Fella i speaking to said Alli is one of those players who looks far more assured and comfortable with better players around him, like at Spurs. TBF i think he's pretty much nailed it.

frank_spencer Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 and walkers pace has got us out of some tricky situations, especially on the counter all 3 have been brilliant imo Apart from his fuck up yesterday (from his natural right back position) Walker has been excellent
jimmyjoojar Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 Maguire has been very impressive, he's proved he deserves his spot in the team. His progression over the last two years is fantastic and a great story. I've previously been very critical of Stones previously but he seems to becoming less prone to the daft moment* Walker has done ok in there too. * cue an monumental fuck-up Saturday now!!
L/H White Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 only one win in eight against sweden according to talksport
barrycowdrill Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 and walkers pace has got us out of some tricky situations, especially on the counter all 3 have been brilliant imo Yep, compliment each other very well. Walkers pace, Stones on the ball and Maguire winning everything. who has also looked decent in possession credit to Southgate (again) for sticking Walker in there
jeep Posted July 4, 2018 Posted July 4, 2018 only one win in eight against sweden according to talksport How many have they won? Without checking I'd have a guess at only 2. With 5 draws.
