France has been on the receiving end of Islamist terror more than anywhere else so it would be great to see Paris celebrate but I will be cheering on Croatia.

I've a real sense of melancholy, perhaps because hopes were raised than dashed by England's positive showing, perhaps because it's been a good 'un and there is no more, perhaps because in the absence of England I wanted Croatia to go on and win it, perhaps because I can't force female members of the family to sit through Morocco vs Iran et al in revenge for all the shite they watch at other times..?

 

But most probably because as Hugo Lloris lifted the trophy it felt like only ten fucking minutes since Philipp Lahm did the same four years ago...
