Did Nashville/Memphis/New Orleans and a few places in between Get a convertible Stay in at least one dingy motel where you feel like you could get murdered Avoid hotels and do AirBnb to get a real feel for the places you stop off at We stayed in an Antebellum mansion by the Mississippi as well, but you probably won't get the chance on your route There's some good road trip books out there that will point out places of note and things to do, we managed to drop in on a blues festival in some run down ghost town

September 18, 20196 yr I like to booze on holiday so a road trip not much good for me. We have however done an escorted trip from Atlanta, Chattanooga, Nashville, Memphis and N.O - loved that holiday so would also be my choice

September 18, 20196 yr I have done Chicago to San Francisco on the California Zephyr sleeper train and it was ace. 3 days 2 nights it passes over the Mississippi, through the Rockies, the Nevada Desert, the Sierra Nevada mountains and along the coast to SF.Price 5 years ago was roughly £150 for a normal seat without food, to £600 for a bed in private cabin with 3 meals per day If you are wanting to drive across the US, I think most travellers would say Interstate 10 from Jacksonville to Los Angeles is the top journey rather than Route 66.It goes through New Orleans, Houston and Phoenix to name the bigger cities.

The only time we knew exactly where we were was when we passed the obligatory water tower on the outskirts of small towns. I found that if you want to visit any of the towns and cities you need to come off the interstates and follow the smaller roads.

I found that if you want to visit any of the towns and cities you need to come off the interstates and follow the smaller roads. goes thro Tallahassee, Pensacola, Mobile,New Orleans, Houston, San Antonio, El Paso, Tucson, Phoenix, LA and end in Santa Monica bit of info ( just to show how big Texas is) Houston to El Paso is 746 miles, from El Paso to LA is 802, so its going to take you roughly 11 hours to drive out of the state
