It was an odd end to 79/80. Crowds dwindled badly. Yet there was a touch of optimism because after waiting until the end of January for a second win (which amazing came at home to Cloughy's Forest) we then picked up some more results once Stan Anderson took over. Young kids were coming through and looking promising for the Div 2 campaign... Mike Carter, Phil Wilson, David Burke, Mike Graham etc. An optimism that was not to last!

To be fair crowds had already dropped before that game in April.  4 home games in March v Forest, Derby, Norwich & Spurs (decent opposition) totalled 55k, an average of less than 14k.  

Off topic but while I was checking those fixtures after the Man U game, I had to do a double take.  Played Utd on 7th April, then Middlesbrough on 8th April, both at home.  And that was after playing at Goodison on the 5th!  Does anyone recall those 3 games, or did anyone attend all 3?  I hardly went to any games in those days, but I was taken to Boro at home by a neighbour, remember it well, stood on Manny Road, it was a decent game (2-2) but I had no inkling that United had played there 24 hours earlier.  I enjoyed it that much I was asking could we go again a week later, played Coventry in their famous brown kit (1-1).  Attendance 8,995.

In our relegation run in 79'80, i went the last 10 games home and away, missing the 4-4 at WBA.

i did ,there were hardly any bolton fans at goodison, infact there were everton fans in the away end

With that twat Brian Kidd and Gary Megson scoring two of the goals in our 3-1 loss.

Kidd was scoring for us the next season, he was quality at times (it was the 1st season I got the BWFC bug, stood on Embankment most games, great view).  I went to Goodison that season watching Wigan in the FA Cup 4th round (all my school mates were Wigan fans and it seemed like a cracking day out for 14 year old), they took around 10,000, packing the Park End.  Kidd scored in that too.

I blame Kidd for breaking my ankle on the terraces at Shrewsbury for missing that Pen in Nov 81, he never played again for us.

All the filth were already in the Embankment by the time I got to the top of the Manchester Road North stand. It took my breath away how many were actually crammed into the end, must have been an accident waiting to happen with the crowd swaying as much as it did. The noise was electric mainly from the filth but the whites gave a response back.

When Pearson scored the ground erupted and lead to many a skirmish, mostly outside along the fence leading from the Embankment to the main road, under two bridges and the odd bump towards town.

 

My main memory of that day was one of fear beforehand - I was in my early teens and attended with similar aged lads , such was the reputation United fans had -  at that time we always approached Burnden from Bradford Road and Weston Street and you just knew it was at an altogether different level that day as there were large numbers of United fans parked on and around  Bradford Road heading for the ground - we all hid our scarves just to keep safe . It was rare to see any visiting fans in that area.

Anyway this was how the trouble was being reported that evening in one of the late editions of the papers - whose print deadline was probably 2- 3pm 

United fans on rampage

MANCHESTER UNITED fans went on the rampage before this afternoon's game at nearby Bolton. Six windows were smashed at the town’s technical college on the way to the ground and another was broken at a nearby office.  A cleaner in the office narrowly missed injury when the window was shattered. It was done by a boy among a crowd of about 100 who ran past - she said. Three windows were smashed at Trinity Street station and fans ripped a jukebox from a wall and smashed a window at the Railway Inn in the town centre causing about £40 damage. All police leave was cancelled for this game the first between the clubs in 12 years.

 

 

On a brighter note did anyone go to the 3-0 win over the filth that Friday night.

A great memory that,  I was there sadly wasn’t old enough to take in the pubs, that game and the promotion win at Rovers would have loved to have been of pub age for those 2.

Same here on the pub front but managed plenty on away trips from Halliwell Central Reform Club. Remember meeting up there at about 8am for places like Notts County, Stoke & Mansfield & still missing kick off 😁

Pretty sure that clubs played Xmas day and Boxing Day once upon a time, think it was same team home and away. Unless I dreamt that.

Also did the 1-2 at OT, same season? Franky brace + Martin Buchan scored for them - some red prick missed a pen? , Not for the faint hearted after the game iirc..
