Don’t interpret this as we are ok as we are, definitely not. It would be naive to suggest we are close to a side that can comfortably compete in the Championship. We are all desperate to see who these incomings will be, that can propel us forward. However, talk of us being no better in any area is also wide of the mark. There is still plenty to be positive about and which wasn’t in place this time last year. FH and SS are another year along the line of building us up to compete at a higher level. The defensive line has been re-shaped. Early signs are good. We’ve addressed the area that was a weakness last year. They’ve also consistently been playing together in pre-season, building relationships and partnerships. Compared to blooding a questionable U-21, we have an experienced keeper who has played at this level before. Rodrigues is a massive plus. A proper pre-season behind him and one where he has excelled and looks like he can be our creative impetus this season. We’ve got added Investment into the club. There’s a confidence among the players and squad, now that they have a promotion behind them, and a belief that they can prove themselves as Championship players. We are in the Championship, and competing, in our mini-league against sides who potentially, could be facing bigger problems than us. Still a way to go, but it’s a good foundation from which to continue to build on for our 26-27 season in the Championship.

It’s far from Happy Clappy to have the discussion that, even without knowing what happens in the next few weeks, (getting anything from 4-6 newbies seems to be the common expectation) that there are sides that we can compete with this year to avoid relegation.

I love stuff like this, As football fans we become so myopic about what’s happening in our club, forgetting that other clubs similar hysteric fans are fretting about their pre-season squad potential.

I agree with this. Because there is a massive difference between fan expectation and what the ambitions and targets are in-house for the management and squad. Need to be kept in-house those conversations though - fans would have thought BSA was delusional talking about qualifying for Europe after avoiding relegation in the prem league. Similarly if SS is telling the likes of Dalby, Sheehan, Forino and Rodrigues that they are the spine of the team that can propel this squad to becoming an established champ team and beyond, then that’s great, I’m all for it. But imagine that out in the public domain with fans so quick to criticise and hold managers and players accountable. One bad game and they are all ridiculed by the fan experts.

Do I need a VPN because it’s only for international viewing? How much to watch it? Grumpy fans and know-it-all fans who think they have all the answers after every defeat will definitely be hard going. Even though I’m probably pretty high up on WWs happy clappy scale, it’s always balanced and with pretty low expectations. I’ve heard folk on other socials predicting us for top half and even top 8 - I’d like some of the drugs they are on! 😂

A little, but I’m also excited in anticipation of us being back in the championship after so long, playing some good clubs. I think we need to look at it at being 2/3 mini-leagues within the division. So while we might well get a few turning-overs from the likes of West Ham, Wolves, Burnley etc. (and don’t get be wrong these will be disappointing!) When it comes to the likes of Cardiff, Lincoln, Blackburn, Charlton, Portsmouth (and no doubt a few others) then let’s hope we can compete consistently. Yes we are still short and yes we are very much at the lower end of competing financially and experience wise. But let’s look at this as a challenge, let’s see if we can push an extra 10/20% from what we have. There may also be a few surprises along the way! Let’s embrace it, not be anxious and worried about it. Reality in check - 21st here we come!

And as always the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Football fans do love an extreme. FWIW, I like him and hope we get him. But all this building him up to be the next Andy Walker (more elsewhere than on here) and some kind of saviour is setting him up for a massive fail. He’ll have less space, less chances up against better defenders and score less goals. Then we’ll have to deal with “Kenny’s not as good as he was last season and he’s failed to live up to his potential”

I’m mixing up 3 games here, but thought I’d keep in one thread. As for Saturday, there will probably be more mixing it up, so yes minutes for Lorrazbel would seem right. As for our current best starting 11 there’s a few toss ups. Watson/Simons is one of them. Just Simons for me. Bit of champ experience, knows and links up well with Sheehan and Rodrigues. Think Watson could be a slow burner, will hopefully grow into the season. Maybe even one for further down the line
