The new ones 431A and 404 A etc are smaller molecules. But all systems have to be gas tight . It's why the fgas regulations exist . Every system over a certain size has to have regular leak tests . These have to be documented. The old freon gases R22 , R502 ( the "bad " ones ) which are now illegal over here but the chinks and Indians still produce them . There is an massive illegal trade in Refrigeration gases . A 60kg cylinder of gas used to cast 10 yrs ago £350 ,now its £3780 . Garages charge a fortune, a car air con gas charge is no more the 32ounces. You do not top up a system, what's left is decantented , the system is then pressurised with OFN , this is used to find the leak. Usually with soapy water . The leak is repaired , system vacuumed out then a fresh charge added.

I have been in the automotive Air Con business for 40 yrs . I have also been on the industrial Refrigeration business for 48 yrs . Unless there is a leak , the system will carry on working. ( gas wise ). Yes the compressor can fail or the condenser fan on a larger unit . The gas does not deteriate . It's a massive con. We have company vehicles leased , I have lost count of the number of times , when they go in for a service and we get a phone call saying the air con needs a re- gas when they go in for a service. My reply is always the same " hang on I will be right down " Get there , either ( ford's, toyota, VW , or BMW , all main dealers ) Or Kwik fit . Hi mate , show me what's wrong and where the leak is . ( BEARING in mind I wear a company shirt with our badge on the front and a/c specialist + industrial Refrigeration on the back . 19 times out of 20 . Has the system been diagnosed as short of gas. If so ask the garage to show you where the leak is . How they are going to repair it . Then the system can be recharged . So many folk get ripped off with this .
