yes , as in that collision , the fire did not spread to the rest of the cargo We dont know what the rest of the cargo was, it might have been multiple liquids some more toxic or flammable than others. It might have been a single cargo of ATK but we use the term loosely of "oil tanker " to mean a large vessel carrying crude oil but most smaller than 250,00 tons are carrying multiple refined products.

On a tanker that size there are generally 33 separate tanks , this enables it to carry multiple cargoes on any voyage . Once cargo is loaded ,the exhaust gasses from the engine are pumped over the cargo in sealed tanks. This is the inert gas system that has been used since the early 1970s to prevent fire and explosion. It is only when the tank is breached and oxygen floods in that fire can occur. The fuel they were carrying sounds like ATK or aviation turbo kerosene or fighter jet fuel . It is very refined and would have covered the sea but also burn very fast with very little pollution. Not that anyone would want to be near that fire it would be intense and there would not be enough foam on either ship to smother it.

Its absolutely this , the wage they get is a fortune back home. Worked with half a dozen young eastern European couples that have built new houses back home while working here , now gone back. The South Asian contingent work for a few months and then take a couple of months off , in general they life in big family set ups so come and go with family commitments.I have worked with a few that have arrived here through first Spain, then Germany and ended up in Italy ,came here and dipped their toes in the water but our NHS is not good enough for their sick kids. Sacked us off and gone back to Italy , had financial help in every European country they passed through
