Monday this week i acquired a new work vehicle (its not mine , i don't own it and didn't choose it,) anyway its full electric.

Was fully charged when i picked it up and they reckon you get approx 200 miles out of it.

I haven't got a designated charging point for it, its 1st come 1st served at a place across town that isn't where i park the vehicle, so today i thought I'll go and plug it in for a bit and it should last till next week.

I gave it about an hour & 20 mins and i gained 11 miles!!!

11 miles 😯😯. Am i doing summert wrong is is it always gonna need an overnight job, its well out of my way to keep changing overnight.

On our way back from Orkney around Easter we stopped at Gretna services, they had loads of charging points but still a big queue of EVs waiting to plug in, that put me off going full EV.

I would imagine that if you're getting the same charge time, irrespective of power, then the onboard charger is very small- this governs the charge rate, not the machine you're connecting to.

Modern EVs now have large on board chargers so you can power up very quickly at high powered jobs away from home.

At home you're still limited to 7.4kw on a single phase supply- the standard on domestic homes.

I would suggest consider what your needs may be for the future- a smart charger job allows you to feed power back into your home which can be very useful and cost saving. You charge up at a cheap rate and utilise the battery at higher rate times.

Charge rate on the car in looking at is 3.6kw, which explains why it's the same to fully charge no matter what size charger you use.

Suppose it depends if we want to have an element of future proofing as you suggested.

The cable is supposedly an expensive rapid change cable came as a freebie from the dealer with the van and i was told not to loose it as it was a good one, i didn't stay in it all the time however when i unlocked it and jumped back in it was saying charging interrupted, that's when i thought f*** it, must have surely put me 50-60 miles on and will do the rest of the week as there was 74 already left on.

Im not back till Tuesday, I'll do it overnight on Tuesday and let you know what happens.

it defo gets better. I remember having all sorts of issues at the start like driving to Nottingham and back and having to run round Huddersfield looking for a charger. Now I could do that trip without a charge. Think you learn to drive the car different from what you would as a petrol or diesel as stupid as it sounds.

I'm like you in that I'm nowhere near wanting electric. Taking the cash and buying my own. 

I reckon volvo might be first out of the blocks for none tesla. With volvo and polestar they'll have a pure electric range only soon.

The main problem with Hybrid, is that when it runs out of electric, you're dragging around half a ton of battery, that make the ICE part of very inefficient. Short journeys fine, longer journeys, not so great

Hybrid would be fine for you, and probably work out financially beneficial - I do loads with EV companies, they're basically paying my mortgage these days 🙂, but I'm still sticking with Diesel for as long as I possibly can

New range of solid state batteries coming, and Toyota will join the fray.

Soon be much of a muchness: get the biggest battery/range you can afford.

In that case pure electric is a no brainer.

You won't be able to buy a new hybrid after 2030 neither, unless they change their minds.

For me, hybrids are a fudge, especially if they're self changing only.

I’ve got an EV6 regularly take it to Northern Scotland. I can get from 10% to 90% and 250 miles range in about 15 mins on a 350kw charger, ionity/fastned and Tesla chargers all good. Low BIK and 0-60 in 3.4 secs, now a convert

Nice car but expensive. How do you use Tesla chargers on a Kia BTW? Any issue with lack of points on major services? I would like to go full EV but have doubts.

Tesla stations opened up to all evs a while back.

There are charging points not too far off motorways, and apps will tell you which are in use and which are available pretty much in real time, so you can decide en route.

Obviously, you can't bugger about with an app on the motorway, but passengers can, and maybe a car's display will also have the ability to show them.

Just checked, Google maps shows charging points.

All true but its shit that you still need to plan things. The infrastructure just isn't here yet, and won't be for many, many years. 

I still honestly belive that EVs are the "Emporers New Clothes" those investing now, could catch a cold. 

We just need Scalextric roads.
