Choosing A Film

Featured Replies

When browsing through the 47 million films available on streaming services how do you choose ? More importantly how do you exclude ?

I have a number of rules

1  Nothing with Liam Neeson.

2. No subtitles or dubbed. (Subtitles only applies to whole film)

3 Film must be at least 90 minutes.

4 Nothing supernatural - no need to try and figure the plot out to find out it was just a dream and the baddie came from another planet

5 Nothing involving sport when watching with my missus.

6 No horror

7 No wacky ‘funny’ films especially American

My missus thinks I am a pain in the arse, but as a wise man once said if we do not have rules we may as well be French.

The ballad of Wallace Island

Surprised to see Liam Neeson chosen, I'd have Mel Gibson, Danny Devito & Kevin Costner as much worse, though I'd accept that the last two have been in decent films but they'd have been better without them .  Mel Gibson I can't stand !!

No 1 to avoid ( or immediately switch off )for me are car chases or exploding helicoptors............thrown in because the plot or dialogue is flagging but I find them tedious.

The answer will always be Jaws

Aye Nowt with Neeson in. He's been pretty much making shitty versions of Taken for 20 years.

No superhero noncery.

pourquoi pas?

I can't remember the last time I really enjoyed a film. And when I say really enjoyed I mean, that-was-fucking-great enjoyed. For me nothing in the past 25 years, possibly longer, stands out. I often hear people say that Dead Mans Shoes is a classic. A British classic just to give it that little extra gravitas. Is it fuck. Its got a couple of stand out scenes and that's it. Its light years away from being a classic or brilliant or any other superlative that some want to attach to it. Classics are Lawrence Of Arabia. The Great Escape. Jaws and Bridget Jones's Diary.

Are you anti samitic ?

We generally try and watch a film as a family every Sunday night.

I can never remember what happened as its usually post Bay Horse Sunday Service.

Or if I'm on a fitness mission they can all get fucked as Im sulking and I never get to chose anyway.

Anyway watch Mr Nobody would be my choice if I was allowed. Followed by Mr Nobody 2.

I like simple films that don't stress me out.

There's always a full blown row about what to pick.

Kids have no idea we used to have to walk to a video shop and pay for one.

Blockbuster- what an era

Do still like a trip to the cinema. Phone way & a beer in hand.

At least once a week there will be a film on itv4 or film4 that I stumble upon which, regardless of what time it is, I have to watch. Usually an 80s or 90s classic. Rambo/Rocky/Gladiator/Lethal Weapon/Braveheart etc.

Stallone must make a fortune off these channels

With the X rated films on top shelf !

Stumbling upon is cheating, I am talking about having to agree with someone else what you are going to ‘enjoy’ together. We spend best part of an hour some weekends picking something that I watch whilst flicking through stuff on my phone or if the film is really shit I open the Politics threads on here.

Oh yes we also do that. She will name a film, I will check reviews, before you know it it’s bed time and nothing has been watched.

Or you spend ages, can't agree, let her choose and 5 minutes in she's on her phone

‘What does Rotten Tomatoes say ?’

Strangely anything that gets very high marks from the critics is usually shit, definitely prefer the popcorn meter or the audience view.

Sure sign film ain’t great is when she starts telling me who one of the actors is married to in real life. Or other trivia about their lives. Sorta ruins the willing suspension of belief you need to make a film work whe n you are being told he used to be in Hanna Montana or once went out with Selena Gomez.

Similar, but then it's generally followed by Mrs Sweep falling asleep within 10 minutes of it starting.

Im a bit like that or when i do finally pick one ill spend the first half of it googling which actors have been in what films then just give up on it as i've been paying fuck all attention to whats been going on. Then probably go and watch some dog shite on youtube

Same here. My attention span isn't long enough any longer unless it's a film I'm desperate to see.

Which is rarely! 😁

Always quite nice when a previously unwatched film produces an unexpected, but fine pair of breasts.

Not a common occurrence by any means though.
