I’ve not retired yet… still paying 40% paye… fucking stupid I know… should have gone self employed and dodged like fuck….ive paid 40% for over 20 years… If I stay here they’ll give me 12750 tax free and tax everything else at 20% you can’t live on that so your in effect giving them back the half the tax you claimed while building up your pension. Oh and inheritance tax will be paid on my pension pots after 75 when I die meaning my wife who’s got only small pension will suffer after I’ve passed away…. It’s corrupt system, I’ll also add public service sector bods can retire at mid 50s and will receive a defined benefit pension running into 100s of thousand pounds from the state while folk like me have to wait until 67… is it any wonder I’m looking to preserve my hard earned money for my family and away from the government tax vultures.

You’ve saved 40% tax on your pension contributions, but only get taxed at 20% when you take it out. So you’re getting a tax break by paying a lower rate of tax on your earnings.

My brother works in the public sector. He’s not on a defined benefit scheme. He won’t be able to retire in his 50s. Their pensions schemes have changed materially in recent years (to their detriment).

People who earn more pay more. It’s been that way for decades. Trying to avoid paying taxes will only make public service worse. But then I guess it won’t matter if you move and live in the EU (despite you despising the EU).

Wealthy person in wanting to avoid paying tax shocker.

No doubt you'll be back here for the inevitable eye, knee, hip and heart operations when the time comes, pumping the system for more than any immigrant ever has.

Why get involved in a topic you obviously know nothing about.

The future is definitely getting large chunks every now and then paid offshore......so I've heard....probably

Although, you've, as a higher rate tax payer, been getting a decent amount of tax relief for those 20+ years, so it's not all as bad as you make out.

For what it's worth, I don't disagree with a lot of what you say, and I can see why many people now avoid initial tax in this country and squirrel it away offshore. By the way, my work colleagues in Netherlands, Germany, Italy* and Spain all pretty much say the same as you......so I'm not sure there is an absolute perfection anyway

*The Italian is the worst of the lot, you listen to him, and you'd think that Italy was completely overrun with ISIS :), he reckons it's an absolute shithole of a  country to live in, and he'll be moving to Cyprus in the next few years

When you retire you don’t earn anything…yet still pay tax on everything over 12750, if you take too much out you run the risk of running out of money and into poverty, especially with inflation eroding your wealth on top of tax.

You think Cyprus is an Islamic country and you have also implied that most Brit patriots fuck off to Islamic tax free nations. If you’re getting Both of them wrong I doubt you will be getting much else right. At least you’re consistent.

I don't accept it's a corrupt system, it's just harsh.

The public service pension system, whilst a good one, isn't as beneficial any more.

You also draw an incorrect comparison.

You don't have to wait until 67 until you retire- you can do so once you reach the right age (55iirc) and can afford to live on whatever your pots will yield.

I bought an annuity not long back with mine: it's worth next to fuck all, but it has allowed me to just do my thing part time.

Suits me as my epilepsy and its knock on effects have taken its toll.

All man can only claim their state pension at 67. Being in a public service pension doesn't change that.

Listen here pal

I see so many fkkrs grow old and negative when they pack in work... Me? I'm happy with my lot in the UK, there is so much more to do... I fell in the river today pissin' around, went arse over tit down the bank and splashed in, would I do that sitting on my arse drinking Ouzo from dawn to dusk and moaning about things aren't what they used to be?

I’d spend my time keeping fit, cycling, walking and travelling, watching as much sport as possible. Loads to do in Europe and better weather to do it in. I’ve been for a country walk today and although cool it was pleasant and sunny, to many drab, wet dreary and depressing days here for me.

You'd have to be a very bitter and jealous person to have digs at folk who want to have a better life.

Absolutely, people who have'nt experienced it, can't make informed comments. Its each to their own, but  all i see  from the UK tells me i know i made the right decision.

You haven't experienced life in the UK for 7 years, yet you're commenting on it. What's your 100% accurate news source?

Is there actually such a thing.

No. So why are you commenting on life in the UK, which you haven't experienced for the best part of a decade?

1 hour ago, Cheese said:

I said "a bit like", not "exactly the same". Do you think if you've paid in for 40 years but never needed any medical attention, you should get your money back?

A bit like means fuck all like really in the point you're trying to make

If you're trying to make a point you need a bit more than a bit like

AI is probably the best way to start. Just ask basic questions and it’ll take you wherever you want to go information wise.

It’s good to ask on here though as you may get replies from people who have gone through the same and others who may be thinking the same.
It’s also entertaining to see some of the moronic replies😅

Just be careful is my advice... set the alarm clock for 7am and actually do things. Just like dogs we need routine.

I tend to avoid retirees as they tend to be boring and negative, try to avoid that club please

I can comment on anything i want too, you seem to have an opinion on anything and everything even without and knowledge of the topic.
