Mounts I usually agree with what you say, but thats a very bold statement from I'm guessing one or two freindlies (apologies if you have seen him play regulary). I just hope that you are proved wrong and he more than fills the gap that Diouf has left.

it might be a generational thing...............people of a certain age enjoy the benefit of a proper education, younger folks have been the victims of comprehensive/socialist politics ie they find it difficult to speak, write etc

I thought Vaz Te's skill was fantastic , he totally bamboozled 3 players and his volley was very tough , That's one of the hardest volleys in the game , One over shoulder , i though he was unlucky .

 

Dzemaili run in injury time was nice aswell but is corner before that was a waste , nearlly gave shittu an injury running into boards .

 

A very poor performance on the whole again just like against Aris , it wasn't a penalty ( looked a dive , but that might of been the laggy stream ) and it wasn't a red card though .

 

Davies as just ran around for the last 2 games , and done nothing . Jussi did some fine stops tonight ( not as much to do as Al Habsi v Aris ) but his kicking annoys me , and AOB just pelts it into the air , but he a very good defender .

 

Our passing seemed more assured but it was only really between the defence and midfield , it was more backwards football than anything .

 

Obadeyi hasnt looked impressive neither , but i know he has potential . Not a very good tour , 2 lame games , hopefully We'll look stronger with Riga and Elmander playing together with our full 1st team playing .

there comes a time in pre seasom where it must mean more than just fitness,

 

results and performance must come into the equation for a confidence factor.

Exhibit A is that post.

I'm not worried about our pre-season form/results. We have played all the games now and scored 8 goals and conceded 3 and have had only 1 game in which we have played Elmander and 1 game in which we've seen Riga play the number of minutes which counts. When we had Elmander in the team for our only game we thrashed a championship club 5-0 away from home and he linked up well. I remember 2 season ago when we didn't win a single game in pre-season and come the start of the prem we got off to our best ever start and we're 3rd come January. Results mean nothing in pre-season. I'm sure all the players + even the new ones in Muamba, Riga who were relegated, Shittu who has been relegated recently with Watford and Elmander who was close to relegation last season with Toulouse will want to work hard and have a much better campaign.

 

Pre-season is all about fitness and i'm sure tonight more than any other game they got that as they were playing with 10 men for most of the game in much higher temperatures than they are used to. I'm sure that the players will be much better for it come the new season. Results never particularly matter but we have won 2, lost 2 and drawn 2 and utilised a good number of the squad. We have played the likes of Dzemaili, Obadeyi, Woolfe, Vaz Te, Basham, Sissons etc as well as our first teamers from last season which is good to see and i'm sure some will play apart this season. Megson has said one more signing will come by next week and there is still then 2 weeks til the transfer window in which we are prob gonna get at least 1, maybe 2 more, even if only on loan.

 

Our team has shown in pre-season that it is very hard to beat/break down so we should have a very good/solid base on which to build next season. This is very important as you win alot more games when keeping clean sheets/conceding the odd goal and in players like Elmander, Davies, Nolan, Taylor, Riga, new signings etc we should have enough to do solidly + end in mid-table mediocrity which i would take right now if offered.

I think you have just summed up the whole point of pre season friendlies in one line there. It's all about match fitness, twisting, turning and conditioning your body to the riggers of a football match. You can't do that by running around a track. Fitness is first, winning the game is secondary.

With regard to Shittu. He played the full 90 minutes. He would appear to be an adequate replacement for Meite if he goes but is not improving the squad. He looked solid but he did worry me at times when he swung his boot at crosses. The ball was going off his foot in all directions. Is it me but he reminded me of Sol Campbell.

It may sound harsh on riga from 2-3 friedlies, but I cannot see anything in his game to view him as a repacement to diouf, I also cannot see where he will fit into our system. We looked very 1 dimensional tonight and I know we had 10 men but we reverted to Sam Alardyce football, we need at least 2 new signings,someone with pace upfront and anybody with a modicum of composure and vision in midfield.,, otherwise it is going to be a long hard season.
